Started with a light bulb
Inventor Thomas Edison started the company that would go on to become General Electric (GE) in 1878 after he developed the world's first electric light bulb. GE has since grown and diversified, although several of Edison's early business offerings are still part of GE, including lighting, transportation, industrial products, power transmission and medical equipment.
Among the world's best companies
GE is a company built on principles, powered by a culture of performing with integrity and is recognised as being among the world's best companies - named as the Most Admired Company by Fortune Magazine four years running and receiving a Catalyst Award in 2004 for its efforts to advance women employees. As well as featuring in the American publications, Scientific American and Working Mother magazine, GE has been named as the world's most respected company in UK newspaper, the Financial Times, for the last seven years.
