Travel within the UK

If you are working in Britain you'll soon learn that the time it takes to get to work is of crucial importance. Outside of the major cities a car is often a necessity. It would also be a mistake to expect to be able to travel across London in thirty minutes - it can take up to one and a half hours!

Train services in the UK

Britain's train service is a national joke at times. However, this is a useful site for planning your journey on an overground or ‘mainline' train.

Tubes and buses in London

  • For those intending to travel within London, the Transport for London site is very useful, with maps of London Underground (known as ‘the Tube' by Londoners).
  • The Tube is the fastest and most economical way to travel around London. You can purchase a daily, weekly, monthly or even yearly Travelcard, which will also cover buses. Travelcards operate using a series of six 'zones', so ensure you purchase the correct zone ticket otherwise you may incur a fine. You can also purchase the Oyster card, which is a smartcard for London travel. Find out more by visiting the Transport for London website.
  • Buses are a popular means of transport outside central London and for areas not serviced by the Tube or other rail services. They can be a slow means of transport in the City or West End. Night buses are available after midnight when the Underground system closes.
  • Timetables and general transport information are available at http://www.londontransport.co.uk/.

Driving in the UK

  • If you hold a valid international driver's licence you will be permitted to drive any class of vehicle covered by that licence for up to 12 months in the UK. If you are planning to remain in the UK for longer than 12 months, it is advisable to obtain a UK licence. The application form is called a leaflet D100 and is available any Post Office.
  • Read this advice from the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) an official government agency.
  • If you plan to drive around Britain the Automobile Association site is very useful. They even have a journey planner that tries to show you the best routes to take.
