Mind the GAAP
The UK Accounting Standard’s Board has just undertaken a massive consultation on the future of UK GAAP. PQ magazine asked chairman Ian Mackintosh to tell us how he sees the future. Whatever happens the ASB retains the responsibility for overseeing and setting standards for all UK entities other than the listed consolidators (which are covered by European law). To read the exclusive interview go to the pqmagazine.com study zone. You will also find our interview with Sir David Tweedie (chair of the IASB).
You is gone, until next year
Former KPMG trainee Vikas Gupta has been banned from provisional membership. Just as well really as he had claimed £25,597 worth of fraudulent expenses to pay off his online gambling habit. The Manchester PQ was apparently on a six-month contract after failing his exams (perhaps he sent too much time online). An ICAEW tribunal made no order to pay back costs and said he was ineligible to re-register with the institute for 12 months. PQ was confused by this ruling. Does that mean after a year this PQ could reapply to the ICAEW!
Inspiring talent
A perfect academic record might not be the only way of spotting future talent, admits PwC. To a certain extent the firm is challenging its own previous assumptions by changing its assessment route, with the introduction of the Inspired Talent scheme.
The scheme will, of course, work alongside the firm’s established graduate recruitment programme. Currently, depending on the role, applicants to PwC’s graduate scheme are required to have between 280-340 UCAS points tariff and a class 2.1 degree.
Inspired Talent candidates will need to complete online tests and submit a business case to demonstrate their drive, resilience, entrepreneurialism and commercial acumen. Online tests including numeracy and judgement skills will rigorously assess ‘intellectual capacity’, explained PwC.
