Michael Page Contract Roles

Contractors are employed for a stipulated period to provide cover for an absent employee. Contractors paid on a pro-rata basis are placed on the client's payroll on commencement of employment and if either party wishes to terminate the contract they must give notice. Companies use contractors for a number of reasons:

  • To contribute during busy periods
  • To cover for absences
  • To assess the contractor’s viability for permanent employment.
  • To assist with special projects

As a contractor you have the opportunity to work in a variety of industries, experiencing different business styles, building your knowledge of products and developing your technical skills. It’s like weight training for your CV.

Contracting is a good career move in more ways than one; temps may be paid more by the hour, but as a contractor you’ll often be afforded the same benefits and holiday entitlement as a permanent employee. Say, for example, that you sign a contract for 3 months and your employer offers 25 days leave - you would be entitled to 6 days PAID holiday. Temps, take note!
