Recruitment trends in the North

The consensus in the Northern Legal market is that there are still opportunities for high calibre lawyers. Demand for In-House lawyers has been steady throughout the year. Matched by the willingness of candidates to move In-House, this makes the market very competitive in terms of abtaining a position.

Candidates are attracted to In-House opportunities which provide:

  • Increased client contact
  • Better work/life balance
  • Attractive remuneration packages


Given that market is not as buoyant as it was in early to mid 2008, the trend at the moment is for clients to be increasingly selective with an emphasis on prior In-House experience. The exception to this is at the Newly Qualified end of the market, where Private Practice candidates are often considered.

Overall, competition for quality In-House opportunities means that businesses can afford to be discerning, favouring candidates with commercial awareness and strong technical skills.
