Marketing News - November 2009

You’re a temporary worker. Where do you stand?

Like many recruitment consultancies, Michael Page engages temporary workers on what is called a ‘contract for services’. The following articles explain what the terms of this contract are, as well as discussing other issues that affect temporary workers, including holiday entitlement and personal data:

Partnering with a recruitment consultancy

In an increasingly competitive market there are fewer jobs, more candidates and more rigorous selection processes. In this environment, applying for a job can be a time consuming and frequently frustrating process.

Out of date job ads, pushy consultants, multiple agencies working on the same role - any of this sound familiar? Maybe you’ve sent an application and heard nothing back. Or your rejection letter omitted individual feedback, preventing you from improving your chances next time around.

You can avoid the above by partnering with a recruitment consultancy that treats you as an individual. The relationship between a professional and a recruitment consultancy should be just that – a relationship. And a good relationship is epitomised by understanding, transparency and communication.

It is advisable to register with a handful of carefully researched agencies, choosing on the basis of the volume of marketing roles the agency works on, the professionalism of the consultant you speak with and the overall service you receive. Once you have decided, work hard to foster relationships with these agencies to enhance your chances of securing the right position.

Telephoning a consultant directly is a good way to initiate this relationship, moving you to the top of their mental in-tray and ensuring you stand out from the competition. Even better is a face to face meeting but in both cases your goal is to establish a rapport with someone who believes in you; who will represent you in meetings with potential employers and who will refer you internally for other roles.

Remember, a relationship is a two way process; encourage your consultant to be proactive with your CV and suggest companies you think will appreciate your skills and experience. A recruitment consultant worth their salt will have both the intuition and contacts to put you forward for specific roles, and the experience to improve your chances of getting the job you want. Their contribution might include helping you prepare a CV, briefing you on a potential employer, running through competency based questions or playing interviewer to get you psyched before the big day.
