Job Description

The Assistant European Finance Controller is a new role therefore the role and responsibilities will grow and develop as the SSC is set up and then ultimately fully functional. The below is a an outline with the current structure in place:

  • Assist the European Controller with the design, build, implementation and stabilisation of the Edinburgh Shared Service Centre.
  • Assist with acquisition and integration related research and projects.
  • Working with the Corporate Technical Accounting team, interpret and operationalise US GAAP rules (revenue recognition, lease accounting, acquisition accounting, etc.) into the core accounting at the SSC and other European entities.
  • Prepare consolidated accounting packages and narrative for submission to Corporate. Conduct ad hoc financial analysis as required.
  • SSC lead for all Record to Report activities. Review, improve, standardise and streamline all R2R activities.
  • Provide leadership and management to the Financial Accounting team based at the SSC, managing and improving the performance of their output (such as monthly financial packs, statutory accounts, tax deliverables and SoX compliance, etc.) in accordance with appropriate quality standards and the financial timetable.
  • Co-ordinate quarter end and year end additional tasks and activities in accordance with the required timetable.
  • Maintain the integrity of the accounting balances, transactions and SoX control environment; escalate any matters likely to impact this integrity.
  • Line management of Financial Accounting team.
  • Review and post designated GL journals on SAP.
  • Review and approval of designated Balance Sheet reconciliations; monitor and escalate any unusual items or trends.
  • Manage the delivery of the statutory accounts process for all nominated countries to ensure that information is provided in accordance with the agreed timetable.
  • Manage the delivery of tax information as required: corporation tax packs, thin capitalisation calculations, review of VAT returns, addressing any accounting implications of tax audits.
  • Technical resource on intermediate accounting and tax issues
  • Liaison with the internal and external auditors - at an audit manager level. Maintain good working relationships with all audit functions.
  • Act as a mentor and coach for the staff members reporting into this role.
  • Ensure SoX compliance is maintained for all responsibilities within remit.
  • Promote a continuous improvement methodology as it impacts the Financial Accounting team.
  • Manage financial accounting matters for other countries as required, including all of the above tasks.
  • Member of the team involved in transitioning entities and countries into the European Finance SSC
  • Identify, control and escalate items likely to cause interest at higher levels of IM - adopt a "no surprises" methodology
  • Act as Project Manager on all relevant projects occurring within your span of control
  • Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with both internal and external key stakeholders
  • Other duties as assigned by management

The Successful Applicant

To apply for the Assistant European Finance Controller in Edinburgh, applicants will ideally:

  • Hold a recognised Accountancy qualification.
  • More than five years post qualifying experience. Ideally with 2-3 years working in a Shared Service Centre environment
  • Good working knowledge of UK GAAP (with IFRS and US GAAP being desirable)
  • Experienced in preparing UK statutory accounts
  • Good understanding of UK taxation
  • People leadership/mentoring and/or staff management
