Job Description

  • Ensure internal controls are efficient and effective to mitigate operational and strategic risks to acceptable levels, assets are adequately protected, and significant financial, managerial, and operating information is accurate, reliable, and timely.
  • Determine whether business units, processes, and systems are sustainable, operate as intended by management and comply with company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Effectively document and report internal audit results to management through objective presentation of issues.
  • Identify and agree cost-effective action plans with management which adequately address the key risks. Where further commitment is desired, review with appropriate management until the matter is resolved.
  • Prepare written audit reports and assist in the presentation of audit results to senior management and Executive management. Strive to continuously improve communication to appropriate management levels to maximise the value of internal audit services.
  • Follow-up on previous issues and actions to ensure that on-time and appropriate actions are taken to resolve weaknesses.



  • To build effective relationships with senior management in the Bank for the purpose of gathering knowledge of the bank's strategy, plans and operational management. To operate as a principal point of contact between the bank and Corporate Audit for communication of audit plans, tracking issues and sharing findings.
  • Provide banking and financial services audit expertise to other internal auditors, including support for planning audit work, understanding risks, assessing the effectiveness of controls and framing issues and appropriate actions with the business.
  • To assist the Head of Corporate Audit in maintaining, monitoring and developing the Audit Universe for the Society's key banking activities taking into account industry standards and regulations.
  • To assist the Head of Corporate Audit with the development and delivery of an annual risk-based Audit Plan to the Bank Board.
  • Provide insight and contributions to evaluate and improve the Society's risk management processes. Identify areas of potential risk and inefficiency within the business for inclusion within the annual Bank Audit Plan.
  • To support the Head of Corporate Audit in planning, directing and assisting the internal audit co-source partner where appropriate on bank related audits, including test execution support where applicable. Provide assistance and liaise with the external auditors to ensure audits of the Bank also address aspects relevant to the external audit.
  • To maintain, monitor and develop relevant sections of the Corporate Audit Manual and ensure that all audit work on the Bank is performed in line with methodology.
  • To assist with ad-hoc management requests, special projects, fraud investigations and/or be involved in one-off exercises as directed by the Head of Corporate Audit in relation to any corporate activity which the Society is or may be involved in.
  • Provide advice and consultancy services to management on banking risks and how to effectively manage them.
  • To lead on the development and execution of analytically enabled audits (data analytics) through the use of IDEA, including analysis of data from the Bank's systems.
  • Preparation of reports for, and when required attendance at, the Society's and the Bank's Executive meetings and/or Audit Committees.

The Successful Applicant

  • Proven track record, with a minimum of 4-5 years experience, of reviewing banking and other financial services, executing audits and/or providing risk management or consulting services - either gained through practice or within a corporate role.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of working with banking systems, projects and/or other related functions.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK banking regulatory environment and Internal Auditing Standards.
  • Good knowledge of the financial services industry, particularly of the banking sector.
  • Proven ability to understand regulations and see how they apply in a practical way to the business.
  • Independent, professional and objective outlook with the ability to challenge accepted ways of doing things in a constructive and professional manner.
  • Proven ability to work well with functional leaders, leveraging strong intellectual, conceptual and analytical skills.
  • The presence, credibility and communication skills (written and verbal) required to influence others at all levels within the business.
  • An engaging presence, inspiring a spirit of cooperation and a sense of purpose.
  • Demonstrated experience of attention to detail, time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Self starter with a drive for continuous improvement, innovation and quality.

  • Degree (or equivalent) educated - minimum 2:1, ideally in a financial, accounting or other relevant business field.
  • Relevant professional qualification - e.g. qualified accountant or internal auditor (or equivalent).
