Global Tier 1 Contractor working on major UK wide rail projects.

Job Description

The successful candidate will have experience of subcontract procurement - package works and services, preferably with rail association, but construction would be suitable.

  • Ensure project requirements are met and best value deals are negotiated that meet savings targets
  • Manages total annual spend typically up to approximately £2 million per annum and lower risk/ complexity
  • Negotiate agreements for existing projects that support on time delivery and meet SHEQ requirements
  • Works under supervision of Senior Buyers, Category Leaders or Procurement Manager on higher value/ higher risk contracts


  • Supports procurement schedules for various projects in DU as per agreed plan


  • Place all orders for own area of responsibility following processes, including:
    • Managing tender/ITT process
    • Subcontract procurement
    • Application of legal terms & conditions
    • Evaluation of supplier bids
    • Processing via relevant ERP
    • Reporting saving
  1. Applies legal Ts & Cs to contracts negotiated, but refers to more senior staff before amending terms or modifying clauses
  2. Prioritises workload to meet DU & Project needs
  3. Filing/ archiving contract documentation
  4. The Successful Applicant



    • Subcontract procurement - package works and services, preferably with rail association, but construction would be suitable.


    • Basic understanding of key contractual terms, negotiations, and contract formulation.


    • Ability to use procurement processes/ systems (e.g. Oracle, P-cards)
    • Subcontract procurement experience in a large or medium sized construction company
    • Ability to manage and run lower value/ risk ITTs/ RFPs successfully
    • Support high value/ high risk ITTs/ RFPs under supervision
    • Understands tendering/ procurement process including legal aspects of negotiations
    • Negotiation (basic)
    • Basic understanding of legal frameworks and contract law
    • Basic understanding of/ exposure to project procurement
    • Ability to work unsupervised
    • Commercial awareness
    • Experience of negotiating deals of lower value/ business impact, but with a track record of making savings
    • Experience of running lower value/ risk tenders/ ITTs






    • Held Buyer role in a Rail, Construction or industrial environment



    Has successfully run simultaneous procurement projects previously and delivered positive business results
