Costcutter Supermarkets Group is a retail business operating in the Symbol Convenience sector, with their independent members running over 2600 stores throughout the UK. As one of the biggest players in the ever growing and highly competitive food retail sector, the infrastructure across their Trading team in particular has seen significant investment, and Costcutter are very proud of their diverse and talented team.

As part of their business transformation, and in conjunction with their wholesale partner Palmer and Harvey, CSG founded a joint venture called The Buyco, who work closely with the Costcutter Trading team to source and purchase their range. This makes the business model unique, and it's one of the reasons why Costcutter are looking for individuals with an engaging communication style and the ability to forge great working relationships. Collaboration and joint business planning are absolutely key to being able to leverage the benefits from their new operating model.

The role of Category Manager is of huge importance to the business; you would be one of the key players within the Trading team, and wholly accountable for the commercial performance across your remit.

Job Description

The role of Category Manager within Costcutter Supermarkets Group will appeal to you if you enjoy working in a fast-paced autonomous environment. You'll have a well-developed influencing style, and you'll enjoy bringing a number of stakeholders and functions together in pursuit of a commercially successful outcome. You'll have a passion for retail, and you'll be a confident self-starter who enjoys the challenge of shaping strategy across your category, and delivering category plans which will maximise sales and profit for both our retailers and our business. The role encompasses all aspects of Category Management including ranging, pricing, strategy development, supplier management, promotional planning and securing income for marketing and media support. Additionally the Category Manager will mentor and develop the Category Assistants and oversee the Category specific activities of Category Assistants and Trading Assistants.

Key responsibilities of the role include

  • Creation and implementation of Category strategy, to include the delivery of Category plans to ensure that financial targets are met.
  • Use sound commercial reasoning and influence to ensure that availability is maximized across product categories.
  • The ranging and pricing of all products in line with current pricing policy and business strategy.
  • Accountability of product set up sits with the Category Manager
  • Range management and development - identifying gaps, reviewing the current range status, liaising with key suppliers and managing the price proposition etc to provide the most competitive ranging in the sector.
  • Define and manage the strategy for Own Brand (Independent lines) to ensure the Category has the correct balance of branded and own brand products to deliver a commercially sound range/portfolio

Ideally, candidates will have extensive experience across either BWS or Food/Grocery, as there is an opportunity within each of those teams. The successful candidate will need to be really hands on, and will enjoy getting into the detail to drive growth across the business. During the recruitment process they will be able to showcase the following;

  • Significant experience in FMCG, Retail or the Wholesale sector (Buying or Category Management)
  • The ability to confidently demonstrate tenacity, determination and assertiveness in pursuit of a commercially successful outcome, managing conflict where necessary.
  • The ability to help shape our ways of working as new technology is introduced later this year to automate our existing processes
  • The ability to build relationships internally and externally through the use of effective influencing skills.
  • A strong and effective negotiator.
  • Experience of creating and delivering Category Strategy and promotional plans
  • Problem solving skills and a commitment to continuous improvement
