About Our Client

Our client is a world-leading global manufacturing business who have recorded year on year growth over the last few years. Due to changes in structure they are now looking to recruit a Category Manager to work within their matrix structure and manage a spend of circa £30m.

Job Description

This role of Category Manager will be responsible for:

  • Providing a proactive and cost effective procurement process, having regard for total life cycle cost, quality and timeliness for a spend of approximately £15m for direct raw materials & services, including Subcontract finished goods for resale, in a business environment of continuous improvement.
  • To ensure through the Purchasing Team that all established processes are carried out within agreed guidelines and that the Purchasing function interacts with internal and external customers in line with the culture and business ethics of the business.
  • Provide information and advice to the business on market trends in the supplier base and commodities under their control.
  • Working closely with the Global and European Purchasing team to deliver best value from bought in goods/materials and services, to maximise profitability and working within the policy and objectives of the various Divisions of the business within Europe.
  • Establish effective and proactive relationships with the key suppliers, whilst developing effective intelligence & information sources of market trends in the supplier base for key materials and services. Acquire the knowledge of the commercial and financial climate, together with knowledge of alternative suppliers and materials.
  • Identify opportunities within UK & Europe to take the initiative and responsibility for the categories under your control to optimise GSC leverage and spend within Europe to improve costs and supply chains, using tools such as Pareto Analysis.
  • Ensure effective supplier selection, contract management, including supplier evaluation, tendering, negotiation and drafting of agreements & contracts to protect the company's commercial interests in line with business objectives, for the whole of Europe.
  • Develop and maintain effective KPIs and Supplier Approval System for all raw material and key service suppliers. Providing and updating statistical information and KPIs regarding the performance of suppliers and the department. Including Cost Improvement Programs (CIP), Purchase Price Indices (PPI) and forecasting indices (FIM).
  • To be proactive, working with cross function teams including; Finance, Operations, Marketing and R&D teams to deliver defined added value benefits, alternative sources and materials within the raw-material category with Value Engineering programs, expressed as budgeted spend monitored as a percentage / value saved.
  • Provide a proactive procurement service for New product development (NPD) including Subcontract finished goods, to ensure sustainable and reliable supply chains, whilst improving margins and company profitability.

The Successful Applicant

The successful candidate will ideally:

  • Experience of the Chemical (or similar) industry and markets preferred but not essential.
  • A strong communicator able to take lead as well as to listen, interpret and adapt.
  • Able to assume responsibility and find solutions to ever changing challenges.
  • A professional, amenable approach with good attention to detail.
  • Proven track record of successfully working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrable numeracy and analytical skills.
  • Educated to degree and/or CIPS Diploma level or equivalent.
  • A clean driving licence

Office based with occasional supplier / business trips & meetings throughout UK and Europe
