  • The role will provide significant exposure to the sales and marketing teams within a FMCG business selling major brands within the UK and internationally

  • The successful applicant must have a highly structured approach to planning their work in order to deliver the period and quarterly standard activities but keep free sufficient capacity to work on new projects.
  • The role requires the individual to be able to participate fully in conversations and meetings with the sales and marketing teams, and confidently challenging commercial proposals whilst developing and maintaining strong relationships with these same teams.
  • The job holder will liaise principally with the commercial teams (based in the UK) but will also work with the manufacturing and logistics team where appropriate for building business case P&Ls

What performance improvements does this role need to make?

  • Ensure highly efficient processes and a structured approach are in place to deliver the key accountabilities below:
  • Take full ownership of the promotional trade spend process, from review and approval through to post promotion evaluation.
  • Improve reporting and develop return on investment analysis for Category Marketing spend.

Job Description

Key accountabilities:


  • Understand weekly/period results and challenge anomalies to ensure integrity
  • Provide commentary by customer and by segment to the Board and Senior Management on variances to budget, forecast and prior year at the end of each period
  • Understand and explain the period end reconciliation of key measures between ERP system (MFG) and the Business Information System (Cognos)

Budgeting and forecasting:

  • Participate in demand review meetings with the sales and planning teams, understanding and challenging changes in forecast since the previous period
  • Prepare analysis to support budgets and forecast submission to group head office
  • Manage the input of information from commercial finance to the central finance team for the commercial elements of the budget or forecast

Trade spend & category marketing spend - approval and review of effectiveness:

  • Review and approval of proposed promotional activity and effectiveness of trade spend
  • Review and challenge of trade spend accruals
  • Review of accruals and forecasts for investment in joint business plans and comparison against the terms of those plans
  • Review of category marketing spend and challenging return on investment

New product development:

  • Business partnering the commercial teams to prepare business cases for new product development and for existing product development
  • Support P&L preparation and challenging key assumptions

Ad hoc support to the commercial teams will also be required as specific project arise

Experience and Skills

  • Qualified/newly qualified accountant (ACA or CIMA)
  • IT competent - strong Excel skills and ability to learn and use new systems
  • Previous experience within a finance function may be desirable but not essential.
