The University of Nottingham Students' Union acts as the recognised representative body of all students at the University of Nottingham, and every student is automatically a member free of charge. It promotes the interests and welfare of students and provides social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities as well as providing a comprehensive Advice Service.

Since 2010 the Students' Union has been a registered charity and through its operation of 3 shops a bar and print shop it is able to supplement its funding from the university.

In all, UoNSU have 15 different business and services they run, and so many things they want to develop that sometimes the things that underpin their ability to do this can get pushed to the back.

This is where the Director of Finance and Resources comes in - to provide exceptional Finance, HR, Training and Business Management services to other Union teams and, where appropriate, to students.

Job Description

The Director of Finance and Resources will provide strategic financial and people leadership and be tasked with the establishment of financial and people strategy and framework that directly supports the organisation's objectives and also supports the development of commercial opportunities. They will also ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and best practice frameworks.

Key responsibilities are listed below but, above all, the successful applicant will be able to clearly demonstrate an innate ability to quickly become part of a highly cohesive leadership team which values the people within the organisation as highly as anything else.

This is not a typical Finance Director position - it is vital that applicants understand this and are able to embrace the wide ranging portfolio of responsibilities that being the Director of Finance and Resources brings.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Create a clear, cohesive and focused Medium Term Financial and People Strategies, underpinned by a robust approach to financial strategy, planning and understanding of the drivers that will have an impact on the medium to long term financial sustainability of the organisation;
  • Develop and implement short, medium and long term strategic and operational plans for the Finance and Resources Directorate;
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the Union's financial and people plans in conjunction with the Chief Executive, Officers and SLT;
  • Safeguard the Students' Union by meeting all legislative requirements with respect our activities (for example - Charities Act, Charity SORP, Financial Regulations, Employment Law etc…);
  • Develop, own and implement core governance regarding People, Financial, Technology and Risk policies;
  • Maintain and enhance customer service standards, including strategic development and implementation of standards to support all elements of the Students' Union;
  • Develop and monitor budget and service plans to achieve agreed directorate and team objectives that meet the overarching organisational goals;


  • Recommends strategic financial and people plan to Trustee Board, with the power to enforce or reject organisational recommendations or board recommendations if they are not in the best financial or employment interest;
  • Autonomy of financial and staff management decision making in line with approved organisational delegated powers of authority;
  • Key decision making responsibility for all strategic and operational matters relating to Finance and Resources Directorate
  • Analyse risk across the organisation and advise and recommend remedial/mitigating course of action to board/organisation/peers
  • All areas associated with financial and people planning, management and control, and the responsibilities of the role as set out in the Union's constitutional documents, the scheme of delegation and the roles/responsibilities of the CFO.

Working with others:

  • Working with Officers, Senior University of Nottingham staff (including lead relationship with the UoN CFO), partners, third parties and other key stakeholders to assist in the delivery of the Union's strategy and directorate operational plans.
  • Working with all levels of management to assist with organisational development.

Developing others:

  • Supporting managers in creation of service plans and creating their own individual objectives that align to the organisation goals;
  • Develop and own the learning and development strategy that outlines and supports the development of all Union staff.
  • Manage Finance Manager, HR Manager and Training Manager, motivate them to work towards delivering the organisations objectives.

The Successful Applicant

It is essential that the successful candidate have a collaborative style and favour a business partner led approach to Finance and HR

They will also be -

  • CCAB Qualified;
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent;
  • Experienced in developing short, medium and long term financial strategies ;
  • Experienced in a multi-disciplinary organisation of at least a similar size and complexity with evidence of delivering successful outcomes;
  • Experience of successfully delivering large scale projects and change management experience;
  • Experience of managing at least two of the functions within the remit of the role (HR, Training, Finance, ICT, Risk, Governance);
  • Strong communication skills, capable of delivering complex messages to a variety of audiences;
  • Understanding of third sector and commercial delivery requirements;
  • Ability to manage, lead and motivate specialist personnel in diverse areas of the organisation.
