My client is a leading independent publishing house established in early 50's. It has companies in London, New York, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore. The company is experiencing rapid growth across a number of different product lines and international expansion across Europe in particular.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Team management - management, training and development of an established team of 13 covering all aspects of financial accounts; cashier, accounts payable, costing, stock control, sales ledger, distributed publishers, royalty management and management accounts



  • Financial Reporting - responsible for timely and accurate preparation of all financial reporting, including monthly management accounts (to include Board commentary) and preparation of statutory accounts for audit process.



  • Financial Control - enforcing, developing and implementing financial policies to control the business. Performing cost reviews, devising and implementing change to control cost within the business.



  • Planning - responsible for the preparation and management of the annual budgeting process for the Group, and continuing the development of the re-forecasting and long term planning processes. Preparation and review of monthly statistics for management including Book Title Analysis, Gross profit percentage, stock value/quantity, sales analysis. Management of the preparation of yearly Title Profitability Reports, and ad-hoc Title Profitability Reports requested, including review and distribution



  • Financial management - providing financial and management information to non-financial managers of the business, developing close working relationships with all areas of the business, particularly with the marketing team.



  • Taxation compliance - managing the process and preparation of Corporation Tax, VAT and Sales Tax returns (liaising with external accountants & tax advisors)



  • Systems development - Key team member in finance IT system upgrade, planned for 2016. Review, devise and implement changes to the accounting systems (in conjunction with the IT function and software suppliers) to ensure that processes are continually improved to keep pace with the business. Ownership of all finance IT systems, including Vista, Tetra and Business Objects. Deep understanding of all aspects of finance IT and the interaction with each team members' role



  • Continual improvement of processes, reviewing all tasks performed by the team and updating processes where required.

The Successful Applicant



Skills & Experience

  • Must be ACA Qualified Accountant with 5 years + post qualification experience
  • Experience of managing a varied team in a finance function in industry, including both qualified and non-qualified staff.
  • Broad-based experience of all aspects of financial management in a small/medium-sized company.
  • Strong technical and accounting knowledge and demonstrable experience of financial control, through balance sheet reconciliations, P&L review and maintenance of financial processes.
  • Experience of working in a multi-currency environment with exposure to international issues such as tax compliance & international payment methods (LC/DC).
  • Experience of financial reporting to deadlines.
  • Strong IT skills and knowledge of the operation of accounting systems.
  • Royalties payments experience

What's on Offer

The successfull candidate will be offered between £65-70k on a Fixed Term Basis or an equivalent day rate
