Job Description

  • COFA role

  • Promote a culture of regulatory compliance within the firm
  • Take reasonable steps to ensure the firm, its managers and employees comply with any obligations under SRA Accounts Rules 2011
  • Maintain a central register of all compliance failures and review on a quarterly basis to establish whether action is required on existing compliance failures and to prevent/minimise the risk of further compliance failures.
  • Report all compliance failures that are material (either individually or as part of a pattern) as soon as reasonably practicable to the SRA.
  • Report non-material compliance failures to the SRA on an annual basis or such other period as specified by the SRA in the prescribed form and by the date prescribed by the SRA.
  • Establish proper policies and processes in relation to compliance with SRA Accounts Rules 2011
  • Keep up to date with any regulatory or other compliance changes that may affect the firm and where necessary amend existing policies/process or devise and implement new policies/processes
  • Ensure staff are trained on any relevant compliance policies/processes and are aware of their duty to internally report failures, relating to the SRA accounts rules, to the COFA.

  • Review of monthly Management accounts

  • Conduct a review of the management accounts prepared by the Management Accountant and present to management
  • Year-end accounts preparation

  • Review the year end management accounts and create the statutory account files ready for statutory audit
  • Complete a review of the reports required prior to the SAR audit which will be prepared by the Management Accountant
  • Bank reconciliations

  • Review the daily Office bank account reconciliation, prepared by Finance Assistant, and flag any issues/queries to stakeholders
  • Review the daily client bank account reconciliation, prepared by Finance Assistant, and flag any issues/queries to stakeholders. Also liaise with relevant stakeholders to reduce suspense/redemption funds received.
  • Audit
  • Plan, co-ordinate and manage the external SAR and statutory audits to ensure an efficient audit
  • Legal costs/budget
  • Review court disbursements and Solicitor fees raised weekly to ensure accurate reporting
  • Liaise with clients to agree budget available for court action and assess funder covenant restrictions.
  • Forecasts
  • Prepare accurate and timely forecasts.
  • Management
  • Manage team of 3 support staff.
  • Finance Systems
  • Ensure that the finance systems (including Direct Debit, bank reconciliation and accounting system SUN) are fit for purpose and working correctly.
  • Operational matters
  • Provide support to firm on general operational matters.
  • Sit on Risk Management Group as finance representative.

The Successful Applicant

  • Qualified Accountant with at least 10 years experience.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Uses own initiative
  • Ensure a high level of accuracy at all times
  • Ability to make decisions quickly and confidently
  • Discretion when dealing with confidential information
  • Knowledge of SRA Accounts Rules
