Job Description

The Financial Controller will lead a team of three, comprising himself or herself, and:

  • An Office and Operations Manager
  • An administrative assistant

The Financial Controller's general responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide a high quality support service by liaising with management colleagues on all aspects of finance
  • Establish and maintain corporate policies, financial policies, and risk management and internal control systems
  • Provide a high quality support service by liaising with management colleagues on all aspects of finance
  • Inform key strategic decisions and support the formulation of business strategies
  • Offer professional judgement on financial matters and advise on ways of improving business performance
  • Advise on the financial implications and consequences of business decisions
  • Analyse financial performance and contribute to medium and long-term business planning/forecasts
  • Interpret and communicate financial data to client teams, and liaise with them to put finances and accounts in contextMore specifically, the Financial Controller will also (although this list is not exhaustive):
  • Support and maintain the systems of purchase control
  • Take responsibility for the statutory books, and ensure submissions to Companies House and HMRC are up-to-date
  • Maintain a register of our intellectual property (including web domains) and ensure it continues to be protected
  • Document and ensure compliance with data protection, health and safety legislation etc
  • Lead the negotiation of major contracts, eg. property contracts, loans etc
  • Support the design and implementation of a staff incentive scheme
  • Lead the productive use of timekeeping software
  • Maintain up-to-date client lists, and oversee regulatory submissions to our industry regulators
  • Lead on all aspects of finance processes - including payroll, payments, invoicing and forecasting - supported by the internal team and our external accountants, and liaising with HMRC as required
  • Prepare periodic financial and performance statements, including profit and loss accounts, budgets, cash flows, variance analysis and commentaries.
  • Maintain our routine financial monitoring tools (particularly the fee forecast and upside logs) as and when required
  • Nurture the development of all members of his or her team.

In addition to the responsibilities set out above, we expect that individuals will be prepared to take on additional tasks at the request of the management team.

The Successful Applicant

What you'll need to be successful in this role:

  • A strong track record in your career to date
  • ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualification
  • Experience within an SME sized agency or consultancy environment
  • Proficient in the use of financial management software
  • You're forward-looking, capable of seeing the bigger picture
  • You demonstrate commercial acumen
  • Highly numerate
  • Delivers work on time and to a high degree of accuracy
  • You're a team player
