SmartestEnergy are a customer focused UK energy market business who are supported by their global parent company - the Marubeni Corporation of Japan. SmartestEnergy provide energy users and generators with choice and flexibility in a market traditionally dominated by major players. The business was created in 2001 as a generation aggregator and is the leading purchaser of independent generation in the UK. In 2008 the firm launched its retail business, supplying largely renewable power to industrial and commercial organisations. Today the business has a diverse and growing portfolio, with over 600 generation customers ranging from communities to blue chip companies, and nearly 1,000 business electricity customers from high-street brands to major manufacturers.

Job Description

Head of Business Change - SmartestEnergy - Ipswich

This is an exciting and challenging role at the heart of the business. The principal role is to drive business change and to deliver operational effectiveness that supports growth. This gives the role two key areas of focus:


Own the governance framework for structured change management through effective leadership of a team of change managers, product delivery analysts and BAs, drive delivery in line with SmartestEnergy's strategic objectives.

Manage a portfolio of change initiatives that reflects the desire for growth at every level - from BAU to transformational - and across every part of the business whether in systems, processes or data.

Build effective relationships with cross-functional teams to support effective prioritisation of projects and to help understand the balance between the need to grow or improve capability versus the need to maintain operational excellence.

Lead and develop the Business Change Team, ensuring the team have agreed objectives, regular reviews, a full and well defined workload, support individuals' development, deal with escalations as appropriate and address any underperformance in a timely manner.

As chair of the Business Change committee, (a sub-committee of the Executive Committee):

  • Drive integrity in the preparation and use of high quality but proportionate project management documentation.
  • Prioritise opportunities for change and validate the scope, objectives and budgets against the strategic objectives and operational needs of the business.
  • Track project performance and through effective reporting, ensure the ExCo and wider business have visibility of progress.
  • Manage the escalations process as necessary with PMs, Sponsors and ExCo.

The Successful Applicant

Head of Business Change - SmartestEnergy

The successful applicant will ideally have a blend of the following:

Technical Experience

  • Complex, large-scale project and programme management skills in both Business and IT landscapes.
  • Track record of preparation, scrutiny and challenge of project documentation - including business cases
  • Change experience across either Financial Services, Energy or other complex regulated environment.
  • Professional qualification desirable (Prince2, APMP, Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen)
  • Fluency in all Microsoft Office products; and expertise in Microsoft Project.

Personal Characteristics

  • Ability to see the big picture and the interlocking dependencies but with strong problem solving skills that enable progress and get the job done.
  • Ability to simplify detailed and complex projects and programmes in order to drive delivery and to highlight key issues and risks for mitigation or escalation.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to develop and deliver persuasive presentations, and strong facilitation skills in order to align cross-functional team interests with wider strategy.
  • Ability to push back with senior stakeholders & deliver required change in a C-Suite environment whilst maintaining stakeholder relationships.
  • Be a proven self-starter who effectively manages and coordinates the activities of multiple cross-workstream projects simultaneously
