The Head of Search Relevancy is a key critical role in delivering both the vision, the purpose and ecommerce targets.



The primary purpose of the role is to create and deliver an onsite search experience to drive growth in the group's primary sales channel, accounting for 60% of sales, and become the customer's primary choice of purchase. The role will develop and lead a global team to deliver a world class online search experience to deliver sales and profit growth.

Job Description

This role is responsible for leading and inspiring a team of 11 roles, of which 3 are direct reports.

The direct reports are:

  • Search Tuning Manager - responsible for managing search analysts for each key market to specify and define issues and target state for search relevancy. Search being the highest interaction part of our business with 13million searches per month. These are key roles to identify complex customer issues and strategies to resolve.
  • Search Algorithm Manager - responsible for managing the core search algorithm. With search accounting for over 13million searches per month this is an absolute critical element of the business.
  • Data Science Manager - responsible for identifying patterns and supporting the search team in investigating and analysing search patterns and behaviours to improve the experience.





Key Accountabilities

  • Autonomous responsibility for the strategy, all decisions, investments and developments to the onsite search engine and experience to drive customers' experience, conversion and sales through the digital channels, which represents 68% of group sales, over £750m p.a.
  • Accountable for search relevancy, the group's no1 customer issue, and subsequent conversion and sales
  • Accountable for identifying key partners (external and internal) to create and deliver a strategy to create a world class, differentiated onsite search experience
  • Develop and deliver a strategy to accelerate the group's understanding of onsite search, it's importance and need for business wide support in BAU optimisation and step-change investment
  • Accountable for the business roadmap, strategy and people capability to develop search relevancy, across desktop, mobile and tablet to deliver the group strategy
  • Manage relationships, influence and drive cross-functional collaboration with VPs and presidents across the group and their respective divisions
  • Accountable for driving digital transformation initiatives within key divisions e.g. Content & IT, in order to deliver the digital vision through the development of digital culture, skills, people, technology and processes.
  • Develop a clear vision, operating procedure, processes and digital culture to lead and inspire a global team to create a great place to work where people deliver their best for customers

The Successful Applicant

  • Extensive eCommerce experience (5-10years) with proven experience of driving significant online growth of key KPIs in a commercial environment
  • Strong search experience, having transformed the search set-up in large scale ecommerce business
  • Strong technical understanding of Endeca and other search engines such as Solr
  • Expert understanding of data science and data manipulation
  • Extensive experience in test and learn approach to search algorithm
  • Expert understanding of search logic set up, the inner workings of search engines and available options
  • Marketing or business qualifications at degree level and CIM
  • Strong experience in user experience research
  • Proven ability to influence and negotiate with senior C-level stakeholders
  • Significant marketing, programme and product management experience with associated qualifications
  • Strong project management skills, ability to oversee multiple project and identify and manage risks
  • Sound understanding of typical PMO processes
  • Prince II and Agile qualified/experienced
  • Ability to work collaboratively with peers and across teams to ensure effective delivery of the strategy
  • Self-starter with the ability to refine working procedures in order to achieve objectives
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven track record of effective influencing at all levels and in a matrix environment
  • Strong budget and financial control skills
  • Able and comfortable to operate effectively at both strategic and operational levels
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic Agile environment
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage at all levels
  • Evidence of strong team leadership skills and ability to create a culture of pace and dynamism
  • Culturally sensitive with the ability to operate effectively in a global role
  • Role model behaviours and foster capability to constantly evaluate eCommerce processes to optimise productivity and quality amongst the team
