Brasenose College is one of the 38 Colleges that make up the University of Oxford. Founded in 1509, it is one of the older Colleges, situated on Radcliffe Square. The College is complex, with many different functions and processes. The College Accountant has a vital role in ensuring the flows of financial information across the College, and by extension identifying issues or areas for potential improvement, and working proactively with the relevant people of all levels across the College to ensure that the college's systems and processes are robust, efficient and effective.

In addition to the Bursar and the Finance Bursary team, key working relationships are with the Senior Tutor, Director of Development, HR Manager, Domestic Bursar and IT Manager.

Job Description

Key areas of responsibility include:

Accounting, Reporting and Financial Planning

  • Consolidated financial accounts for the College, prepared under FRS102 Charity SORP and in accordance with collegiate university agreed formats (including full fund accounting);
  • Company accounts for the trading subsidiary;
  • Summary management accounts, prepared on a monthly basis, and presented termly to Finance Committee, with a detailed narrative;
  • Overseeing the College's annual budget and working with the Bursar to develop three year financial strategies;
  • Cash flow forecasting;
  • Detailed staff budgeting;
  • Charity accounts for the Hulme Fund;
  • Ad hoc reporting for college officers and committees;

Operational Financial Management

Services delivered by the department, and managed by the College Accountant

  • Billing for student fees and all residential charges;
  • University fee funding reconciliations;
  • Conference and Events Sales Ledger;
  • Credit control for student, senior member and commercial accounts;
  • Donations accounting and reconciliation with college fundraising records;
  • Complex payroll comprising 150 permanent and on average 70 casual staff;
  • Pensions management;
  • Disbursement of grants and awards;
  • Purchase ledger;
  • Management of academic and hospitality budgets for academic staff;
  • Liaison with external, corporate land agent, including reconciliation of transactions and reporting;

Investment and cash management

  • Administration of actively managed endowment portfolio;
  • Cash flow forecasting;
  • Investment transaction reporting and liaison with external advisors;
  • Management of cash calls & distributions
  • Receipt and sales of gifts as shares or in kind;

Tax and Compliance

  • VAT returns in complex partially exempt environment for college and subsidiary;
  • Liaison with VAT advisors;
  • Corporation tax returns;
  • Gift Aid returns

Systems development

  • Project management in liaison with IT department of any necessary systems developments and interfaces, in particular the accounts package (GP) and financial aspects of student, residential and donor databases (ERM Kinetix and Raisers Edge);

Collegiate University cooperation

  • Membership of Association of Oxford College Accountants (AOCA), which provides technical support and inter-collegiate peer network;

Team Management

  • Full line management support for team of 5, including performance appraisal;

Student Funding

  • Individual queries, advice, support, and signposting for students with funding of financial support queries and issues, including liaison with OU Student Funding and College Office;

The Successful Applicant


  • Recognised CCAB accounting qualification, preferably ACA;
  • Strong financial accounting knowledge and experience;
  • Ability to identify problems and develop solutions, working with the relevant people across the College at all levels to improve controls, systems and processes.
  • Strong systems skills, with confidence and experience in picking up new accounting systems;
  • Strong excel skills;
  • Excellent organisation skills, with ability to prioritise complex competing tasks;
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated, and a strong drive to achieve results;
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Good team working skills, including flexibility and adaptability;
  • Experience of leading and managing a team;
