Job Description

Management of central processes for the development and successful qualification of trainee solicitors:

  • Seat planning;
  • Secondment allocation;
  • Qualification; and
  • Performance management

Seat planning:

  • Overseeing the trainee seat planning process, ensuring that business need is met.

Secondment Allocation:

  • Overseeing selection of trainees for international seats and client secondments; and
  • Overseeing liaison with international offices and partners/client contacts.


  • Liaising with London supervising partners regarding numbers and predicted qualifiers;
  • Liaising with partners in international offices regarding NQ vacancies for E&W qualified trainees;
  • Advising qualifiers on their bids; and
  • Managing those who have been unsuccessful in their bid for an NQ position.

Performance management and career development:

  • Facilitating trainee moderation meetings and challenging decisions when necessary:
  • Providing confidential counselling and guidance to individuals; and
  • Escalating issues to supervising partners as appropriate.

Employee Relations:

  • Overall responsibility for managing front line trainee Employee Relations issues including:
  • Performance management;
  • Sickness absence;
  • Absence management; and
  • Disciplinary and Grievance matters

Recruitment responsibilities:

  • Interviewer for vacation schemes and training contracts;
  • Presentations - vacation schemes, open days, post-offer events;
  • Liaising with future trainees on Legal Practice Course (LPC); and
  • Attendance at recruitment events.

Budget Responsibilities:

  • Managing the relevant budgets on a monthly basis; and
  • Planning the relevant budgets for the next financial year.

Regulatory responsibilities:

  • Liaising with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) regarding (a) qualifying lawyers who do not undergo the conventional training contract or (b) trainee solicitors employed by offices other than London;
  • Liaising with training teams and the Partnership Office regarding regulatory changes introduced by the SRA;
  • Shaping the firm's policies in response to the SRA's proposals and updating international offices on changes to regulations for trainee solicitors;
  • Responding to SRA proposals regarding regulatory changes; and
  • Advising international offices (partners and local HR) on queries relating to training contracts.

Management & development of HR team for Trainees:

  • Coaching, motivating, reviewing and supervising

The Successful Applicant

  • Graduate qualification with CIPD or similar certification.
  • Technical competence in employment law with experience of managing complex Employee Relations cases.
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulations.
  • Will have worked successfully as an HR generalist practitioner in a finance, professional services, consultancy or law firm.
  • Excellent track record of working with senior management within a complex international organisation.
  • Strong commercial/business acumen with the ability to influence strategic thinking/direction through creative and pragmatic issue resolution.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interface at all levels and particularly to win the respect of the Partner community, building and developing strong client relationships.
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to nurture and work in a fast paced, intellectually rigorous environment.
  • High energy individual who enjoys both the operational and strategic sides of this role and shows great flexibility.
  • Resilient; able to understand that credibility has to be earned in this environment and may take time.
  • A person of sound judgment, able to establish a high level of credibility in the organisation and act as a trusted advisor to Management.
  • Ability to deal sensitively with difficult issues and personalities.
  • Ability to challenge effectively in the face of adversity.
