Job Description

  • Lead in the development of the employee engagement and strategies.
  • Lead on internal communications initiatives arising from the Corporate Communications and Engagement Strategy 2016-21 and associated action plan.
  • Drive internal engagement by developing effective communication campaigns which ensure that the organisations mission, values and objectives, and progress against these objectives, are clearly communicated to employees.
  • Support corporate thinking and the communication of coherent joined up messages by developing a strong understanding of key organisational issues, and linkages between departments.
  • Support the Executive Director of Workforce and Organisational Development by providing advice and support to the Executive Team (TEG) on employee engagement and internal communications issues.

Advise and support the Chief Executive and Directors with regard to communications and engagement activity which engages and inspires employees.

  • Coach and support senior leaders and managers in how to communicate news, information, projects and initiatives to employees effectively in order to achieve the desired results.
  • Manage the development and delivery of creative and influential communication campaigns to help engage employees with programmes of organisational change, projects, initiatives and events.
  • Act as the key contact for the Communications and Engagement Team with the organisations Staff Forum, BME network, LGBT network and the organisations Diversity and Inclusion Unit.
  • Implement best practice standards for internal communication practice across the organisation to foster a positive organisational culture.
  • Manage production and ensure quality of all copy and editorial for internal communication tools and channels, including news stories, features, comment pieces, social media content, email messages, blogs, talking points and scripts, adapting the style, tone and content for different publications and audiences.
  • Assess and manage all incoming staff communications requests, providing advice on appropriate approach, style, tone and cascade of communication.
  • Develop and deliver a programme of employee events that help drive internal engagement including directors' question-time, the annual We Car and Long Service awards.
  • Measure the effectiveness of channels of communication within the organisation. Ensure that the channels promote and enable effective two-way communication and keep line managers and staff aware of issues that affect them.
  • Develop a distinctive employer brand to support recruitment.
  • Work closely with the IT/web team to evaluate communication and collaboration technologies and ensure chosen solutions help deliver the internal communication strategy.
  • Work closely with other members of the Communication and Engagement team to ensure that messages communicated internally are consistent and coordinated with external messages.
  • Work closely with the Digital Communications Officer to develop use of appropriate social media for effective internal communications and staff engagement
  • Take lead responsibility for the Communications and Engagement team's intranet content (PULSE) and advise other managers/departments on development and presentation of their intranet content

Manage and monitor the internal communications budget, adhering to financial guidelines, ensuring value for money and acting as appropriate within delegated authorities.

The Successful Applicant

The ideal candidate will come from a public sector background and have experience working in complex environments.
