It all began in July 1993, in a 60m2 shop in Enkhuizen (Netherlands). The dream was to become an international non-food discounter, with further European expansion! Action now has 150 new products every week, in more than 550 stores and there are 22,000 employees in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France!
The purpose of the role is leading construction at the centre and jointly leading local teams (with local RE Manager) to ensure all construction projects for the company are done on time with the right quality and cost. Construction includes building of new stores, relocations, refurbishments and maintenance of stores.
The RE Construction Manager International has the responsibility to manage International Construction supply contracts and build up strong local Construction functions in new countries. Once a country RE Manager is in place in a country the local responsibility is shared with the country RE Manager. In this international role he/she reports directly to the RE Director.

Job Description

1) Operational Management
  • Oversees the local Construction teams ensuring that each Construction Manager is effectively and efficiently executing his/her responsibilities
  • In general act as sparring partner for local Construction Managers
  • Manage and optimise Construction suppliers at International Level
2) Optimizing
  • Work both internally and externally (with suppliers) to continually improve the construction process, including review and implementation of right mix between in-sourced and outsourced construction works
  • Continually monitor and report on capex, taking action where necessary to push continual improvement
  • Instil a continuous improvement mindset throughout Action Construction teams
  • Identify (both externally and internally) best practices and implement across all local construction teams and at international level 
3) Building local Construction teams
  • Assist local RE Manager / Construction Manager in hiring and training local Construction teams and suppliers 
  • Integrates local exceptions and circumstances in our way of working
  • Transfers International Construction knowledge and way of working via an active participation in the Country RE Meetings and Country Construction Meetings
4) People Management
  • Clearly steers the local internal Construction Teams, takes the lead, gives clear working instructions, plans employees and activities in such a manner that targets are successfully achieved 
  • Is actively involved in improving employee skills by providing constructive feedback, instructions, explanation and coaching
  • Makes employees enthusiastic, clearly indicates the intended effect of targets, brings about a positive attitude towards the work and inspires team members' strong will to perform
  • Gives direct and constructive feedback about the delivered performance and personal development related to future requirements and priorities
  • Stimulates employees to join in on the thought process and to actively contribute to the development of new ideas and to learn from his/her own experiences and those of others
  • Responsible for an optimal staffing, recruitment activities and retaining of employees within the department
5) Reports
  • Prepares various (periodic) Management Reports for the RE Director.

The Successful Applicant

  • University work and thinking level and completed Master degree (preferable technical study)

Proven performance and relevant experience with:

  • Constructing stores 
  • Managing and motivating (construction) employees
  • Managing external construction parties
  • Sound language skills in both written and spoken and English, preferable also in Dutch, German, French and/or Spanish
  • Used to work with different types of software (i.e. Planon, MS Office)
  • Strategic executor: Ability to combine the development of strategy with operational excellence and realizing the mutual agreed deadlines
  • Mature RE MT team member taking on full accountability for Construction
  • Excellent communicator: capable of communicating in an open end forthright manner with all relevant departments and able to convince based on facts and smart analysis
  • Positive mind set, solution orientated and goal driven
  • Works effectively with others to achieve common targets
  • Is very organized, is able to structure activities and projects, sticks to agreements within deadlines and according to guidelines
  • Works efficiently and effectively, also when under time pressure
