Job Description

  1. To contribute to the delivery of a range of regular communications activities including press, advertising, public relations, social media, digital marketing, web content, event management, internal communications and engagement, print/ direct mail and newsletters/ publications.
  2. To develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external clients providing support, advice and training to achieve excellence and promote continuous improvement in the delivery of communications.
  3. To take responsibility for and develop and implement strategic communications plans that are effectively monitored and evaluated.
  4. To work with local, regional and national media both proactively and reactively, handling press enquiries in line with the public sectors media protocol.
  5. To ensure communications are delivered through effective and efficient channels to maximise reach to relevant target audiences, in particular residents and service users.
  6. To plan, edit and be responsible for the delivery of a coordinated suite of publications promoting the council.
  7. To contribute to sourcing appropriate images for publication and marketing materials.
  8. Ensure effective project management is applied to deliver communications projects, working with colleagues as required.
  9. Produce reports and devise feedback mechanisms to ensure services are aware of the results of projects and the support provided to them
  10. Manage the development of relevant, interesting and customer friendly content in Plain English for print, electronic, social and digital communications systems (including website, intranet, Facebook, Twitter, staff forum etc.) to provide continual improvement in the ability of electronic communications to meet customer need
  11. Work flexibly to reduce reliance on the central communications team by ensuring services have the capability and skills to improve communications relating directly to their areas
  12. Assist in the quality assurance, reliability and management of the content of website, intranet and as required
  13. To take lead responsibility for specific clients, activities and/ or projects as directed by the Head of Communications or Communications Manager (Press and PR or Marketing) that are consistent with the level and nature of the post

The Successful Applicant



  • Professional qualification in a communications discipline such as NCTJ, CIM, degree in journalism or marketing or similar and educated to at least GCSE level with mathematics and English. Willingness & ability to obtain &/or enhance qualifications &/or training for development in this post.


  • Experience of working corporately, across boundaries, and with external partners or customers to achieve common goals.Experience of working within a large organisations - either public sector or private sector. Experience working within the various marketing communications skills sets.


  • Technical knowledge in one or more of the areas covered by the post such as marketing, advertising, public relations, media relations, internal communications, web development, design/production or events management. Enhanced written communication skills including the ability to write accurate, concise and engaging copy to agreed deadlines for a variety of audiences in a variety of formats.

What's on Offer

2-3 month contract paying £25-28k salary.
