Job Description

  1. Plan and oversee the team's proactive delivery of regional and local media strategies and specific activities, including overseeing media campaigns, to highlight the third sectors, policy and fundraising initiatives.
  2. Remotely manage four Media Officers utilising the organisations policies and procedures and to provide direction and guidance to the team to enable the function to achieve its overall objectives.
  3. Plan and deliver media activity in the North East, Yorkshire and Humber region.
  4. Manage and deliver proactive stakeholder relations plans for the team, in particular with staff within the Operations directorate, regional fundraising teams and service users, and external stakeholders including staff at local government bodies, supporters and other charities.
  5. Manage and deliver a proactive journalist engagement plan for the team with key regional and local media contacts.
  6. Lead and support the team on crisis/ reputation management issues across the four nations. Liaise closely with the Head of Media on any issues that have the potential to amplify into a nationwide situation.
  7. Coordinate, research, write and oversee media releases, statements, briefings, blogs and articles as appropriate for regional and local media outlets.
  8. Produce briefings and Q&As in order to prepare spokespeople for media interviews, and, where appropriate, to act as a media spokesperson.
  9. Champion and ensure integrated working across the function to maximise the effectiveness of media work and ensure that the charity's reputation is maintained.
  10. Participation in the Media Team's out of hours rota, which runs 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, including weekends and bank holidays.

The Successful Applicant

  • Specialist knowledge, experience and skills
    1. Extensive experience of working within a press, PR or communications office, handing proactive and reactive activities.
    2. Experience of planning and delivering creative media strategies.
    3. Experience of working with regional and local broadcast, print and online media.
    4. Experience of briefing and preparing colleagues and service users to undertake media interviews.
    5. Demonstrable experience of handling crisis/reputation management issues.
    6. Experience of and able to use Microsoft Office packages.

  • Communications Skills

    1. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    2. Ability to demonstrate attention to detail, in order to proof read, ensuring accuracy and consistency of information.
    3. Ability to build rapport and establish, develop and maintain positive stakeholder relationships with journalists, staff, volunteers, disadvantaged families.
    4. Ability to influence other teams with different priorities to achieve shared objectives.
    5. Experience of working on projects/ campaigns within multidisciplinary teams to achieve shared objectives.
  • Team Working

    1. Experience of managing and developing staff.
    2. Experience of managing staff who work remotely. (Desirable)

  • Special conditions

    1. Must be able to travel and undertake overnight stays as required and on occasions to work out of hours.
    2. Participate in the on-call media rota.
