Our client is a Top 20 UK University based in Hampshire.

Job Description

Reporting into the Media Relations Manager, the Interim Media Relations Officer will support three key Science/Engineering Faculties within the University. You will be required to build strong networks with the Academic staff in those Faculties to proactively identify and source newsworthy items; be knowledgeable about academic disciplines within the faculties and write news releases and features for pitching to national and international print, broadcast, and online media.

The Interim Media Relations Officer will be persistent and tenacious in securing coverage for the University's achievements via key journalists and in targeted publications; build and maintain a core team of selected academic staff who are ready and willing to appear on broadcast media; write background briefings and Q&A documents in preparation for media interviews.

The Successful Applicant

The knowledge/skills required for the role are:

  • A degree is essential for this role
  • Substantial experience within public relations/media relations activities
  • ideally with experience of liaising with senior science journalists and commentators (this is highly desirable, but not essential)
  • Experience of working in the Higher Education sector is highly desirable, otherwise Public Sector experience will be essential
  • Highly organised, efficient and thorough and able to take projects from conception to completion
  • The ability to research a range of academic and other topics and turn them into high quality copy is essential
  • Strong copy-writing skills are essential in this role

Up to £30,000 + benefits

This role could either be full-time or 3/4 days per week.
