About Our Client

My Client serves as the regional administrative centre for the Medical Research in the Cambridge region, which collectively host approximately 1000 staff and students. The remit of the Centre is to provide efficient and effective administration, technical and other support services and advice to other units and External Scientific Staff.

Job Description

The Research Contracts Manager will:

To identify and support due diligence, legal and contractual issues associated with the transfer into or out of a Unit of individual research leaders/groups, or in association with the transfer of a whole Unit.

To develop a knowledge of the research portfolio of the Cambridge establishments including the requirement for evaluation and protection of intellectual property. This requires a good knowledge of the various forms of intellectual property rights common to a research environment.

Approve (within delegated authority) or recommend submission of all external funding applications, noting and negotiating any unusual terms and conditions.

To be familiar with the requirements of Research Ethics and Research Governance Framework policies and provide general guidance to research staff.

Collaborative research agreements - mainly with universities and public sector bodies/not- for-profit institutions. Negotiation will include consideration of appropriateness of funding body; the nature of the collaboration; complementarity with the remit of the establishment concerned; compliance with policy and legislation; and the possibility of conflict with other research programmes within the field of science. Terms requiring special consideration relate to intellectual property (IP), publication, ethics/research governance, warranties, liability and indemnity, and the post holder will be expected to present a risk based analysis to the senior contracts manager for approval.

Grant applications (incl. EU funding applications) - support the submission and management of grants in conjunction with Unit, Research Office and staff.

Licence agreements mainly for unpatented material. The post holder will assist in discussions about licence agreements, to support the inventor/scientist, senior contracts manager and the centre.

Consultancy agreements - mainly held by senior scientists with industry. The postholder will ensure interests and policy are protected both at corporate and establishment level and that there are no conflicts of interest between consultant/company. Advice will be given to prospective consultants on appropriate fees and implications in terms of their own liabilities.

Confidentiality agreements - including drafting (based on template) and negotiation to ensure e.g. Freedom of Information Act provisions are included.

The Successful Applicant

Essential: A degree level legal qualification in either business administration, or equivalent expertise in commercial contract preparation and administration in an academic or R&D environment

Relevant expertise contract drafting and management

Background working in a fast paced environment

Good analytical ability

Understanding of intellectual property rights

Expertise of negotiating academic agreements

Expertise of working in a research or academic environment

Ability to explain policies and procedures and to adapt to changing requirements

Desirable: Knowledge of intellectual property management

Expertise in negotiating research contracts incorporating research governance/ethics provision

Expertise of pre and post grant award processes in an academic environment

Expertise providing guidance relating to intellectual property and research governance

Background working in or with the public sector, and understanding of the Nolan Principles
