Charles River is a global leader specialising in a variety of pre-clinical and clinical laboratory services for the pharmaceutical, medical device and biotechnology industries. Due to an aggressive growth strategy, the decision to centralise their European function in Edinburgh is to enable the continued growth across Europe. The central function/ shared service centre will allow best practice to be promoted across the region and position the European business to allow it to further grow both organically and through acquisitions. The Senior Accountant will help shape the strategy of the central function having joined from the offset.

Job Description

The main responsibilities of the Senior Accountant based in Edinburgh are listed below:

  1. Lead the execution of the accounting close for nominated entities, ensuring that financial accounting data is compiled in an accurate and timely manner.
  2. Prepare monthly journal entries requiring calculations of a moderate to high level of difficulty. Review journal entries prepared by others.
  3. Prepare monthly balance sheet account reconciliations with a moderate to high level of complexity. Review balance sheet reconciliations prepared by others.
  4. Prepare quarterly and annual group reporting schedules.
  5. Analyse operating and non-operating expenses.
  6. Analyses complex financial data and extracts relevant information; interprets data for purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial probability.
  7. Provide and interpret financial information for managers to make economic or business decisions.
  8. Ensure accounting policies are being followed.
  9. Assist with the implementation and design of accounting and financial planning systems.
  10. Provide internal and external auditors with requested documentation.
  11. Understand and comply with Sarbanes-Oxley controls. Co-ordinate the documentation and testing of processes and controls and lead the SoX audit for your nominated entities.
  12. Maintain periodic (monthly or quarterly) UK GAAP adjustments journals for nominated entities. Prepare annual statutory accounts and lead the external audit process for your nominated entities.
  13. Prepare VAT returns, tax packs and tax returns for all nominated entities.
  14. Prepare P11Ds and government statistical forms and address corresponding queries.
  15. Perform all other related duties as assigned.
  16. Line management of nominated team members.
  17. Mentor, train and provide work direction to staff as needed.
  18. Identify, control and escalate items likely to cause interest at higher levels of CRL - adopt a "no surprises" methodology
  19. Responsible for building and maintaining excellent relationships with both internal and external key stakeholders

The Successful Applicant

To apply for the Senior Accountant role, it is essential applicants have the following:

  • Chartered/Certified Accountant (CA, ACA or ACCA), or qualified in a large European country (Germany, France, Poland, etc)
  • More than three years post qualifying experience
  • Good working knowledge of UK GAAP (with IFRS and US GAAP being desirable)

Ideally applicants will also have business proficiency in a European language.
