Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • To implement consistent and clear compliance policies in relation to aspects of existing and evolving editorial processes in order to:
  • Review and refine existing policies, and/or develop new policies according to the current and future business practices - e.g. and not exclusively Category 1, competitions; data protection; data retention; premium rate services; marketing; press; media hub
  • To deliver appropriate levels of training, identifying gaps in business processes and working alongside Legal and relevant business area to address any shortfall
  • To develop and implement a stringent and robust re-compliance process for all red flag and sensitive programmes, where relevant in compliance with repeat guidelines
  • To provide first line programme content compliance guidance on all matters for all productions
  • To view contentious, and referred material and liaise with key stakeholders including the Legal Department
  • Preserve legal privilege and consult and refer to Head of Legal in a timely fashion
  • Work closely with Head of Legal /GC in relation to all policy, processes and decision relating to any contentious material
  • To maintain a clear audit trail for all content compliance decisions made
  • To ensure the business comply with all formal and prudent legal risk referral and risk management procedures and policies, as agreed with Head of Legal/GC
  • To maintain the appropriate level of professional training and expertise, including as required by SRA to meet Practising Certificate requirements

Complexity & Problem Solving:

  • To troubleshoot complex content editorial issues by devising clear parameters and risk assessments and managing compliance production bibles per commission
  • To analyse impact of proposed legislation/regulation on business practices and ensure that the business have enabled solutions to support compliance in conjunction with legal and other business units as appropriate

Commercial Impact:

  • To take a savvy approach making the most of budgets and resources

The Successful Applicant

Knowledge, skills & experience:

  • In-depth knowledge of the OFCOM Broadcasting Codes with a proven ability to quickly grasp and work within local editorial policies and guidelines
  • Considerable compliance experience in either a broadcast editorial compliance role or a comparable discipline within a commercial broadcast environment,
  • A high level of content-related legal risk awareness in particular in relation to libel, breach of confidence/data protection law, contempt, racist/other hate speak, IP infringement.
  • Knowledge of the programme making and commissioning process
  • Good awareness of the wider broadcasting environment including interactive television and new multi-platform services
  • Proven ability to influence staff across all levels, including those at a senior level
  • Experience of implementing business best practise policies to support corporate governance requirements
  • Significant experience in a similar role with recent specialism in media law. Candidates should have experience of broadcast or content production environments.
  • Current SRA practising certificate or ability to secure one prior to joining
  • Postgraduate qualification in media law desirable
  • Front-line experience of media litigation desirable
  • A proactive and flexible approach to work and be comfortable with a dynamic environment with constantly changing priorities
  • A genuine passion for TV
