About Our Client

National Express Group is a leading public transport operator with bus, coach and rail services in the UK, Continental Europe, North Africa, North America and the Middle East.

Following continued growth in the UK and internationally, the National Express Group is seeking a Senior UK Legal Counsel to join the UK Legal Team to provide support and assistance to the UK business divisions and Group functions. The Senior UK Legal Counsel will have a high level of responsibility, helping to manage the UK legal function, as well as a good level of autonomy, working with and advising colleagues at all levels of the business.

The Senior UK Legal Counsel role is a full time, permanent position based at the National Express Group Head Office in Birmingham and it will report directly to the UK Head of Legal.

Job Description

We are looking for a senior lawyer who is confident and capable and has the requisite balance of technical legal skills and commercial awareness to help protect and grow National Express' business.

In this role you will:

  • Provide legal advice and assistance to the UK business divisions: UK Coach, UK Bus and UK Rail. The work for the business divisions includes drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts, managing both small and large scale disputes and litigation and advising on marketing, data protection, brand and reputational issues.
  • Provide legal advice and support to the Group functions: Group Treasury, Group Procurement, Group Finance, Group Tax and Company Secretarial. The work for the Group functions includes advising on bank facilities, lease arrangements and guarantees, negotiating large and small scale vehicle, ITS and telecoms procurements and providing legal advice on a wide range of corporate, tax and governance matters.
  • Provide support to the UK Head of Legal in reporting significant legal matters to the UK Executive Committee and ensuring compliance with Group delegated authorities and protocols.
  • Provide support to the UK Head of Legal in managing the relationships with the NX UK Legal Panel of solicitors and ensuring compliance with Panel protocols.
  • Work with the UK businesses and Group functions to improve business standards and reduce risk, including by drafting and assisting in the roll-out of new policies and procedures and providing training on legal and practical issues.
  • As the National Express Group's business continues to grow and diversify, there is also the opportunity to support M&A activity and advise on new joint ventures and partnerships.

The Successful Applicant

Candidate's Profile

The successful candidate will be diligent and driven and will thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

You will have the following qualifications, experience and skills:

  • An England and Wales qualified solicitor with between 5 and 10 years PQE.
  • Experience advising on some or all of: general commercial contracts; IT and IP matters; data protection and brand protection matters; competition law matters; public procurement matters; and litigation and dispute resolution. While previous in-house experience is preferred, it is not essential.
  • Confidence and the ability to inspire the confidence and trust of others.
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, including the ability to influence outcomes.
  • Strong team working skills, including the willingness to pitch in and help at all levels.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to think laterally. Commercial awareness of the context in which legal advice/assistance is given/received is key.
