Job Description

The responsibilities for this Senior VAT Accountant are:

  • Take ownership for researching and responding to ad hoc VAT questions which come from a variety of sources such as VAT audits and other departments

  • Develop relationships with managers within business streams to improve the VAT team's knowledge of the product flows and the businesses appreciation of their VAT implications. Represent the VAT Team on other Business projects as required (for example, acquisitions, disposals, restructuring of billing chains).

  • Review VAT returns and accompanying workings prepared by team of VAT Accountants ensuring these are accurate and submitted in a timely manner. This includes reviewing VAT GL account reconciliations to ensure GL accounts are in line with returns submitted and that outstanding amounts are being paid or recovered on a timely basis.

  • Review and challenge existing VAT processes and procedures, and work with the VAT Manager, VAT team members and other teams such as IT to implement improvements.

  • Supervise a team of two assistants responsible for collecting proof of export documentation to support VAT zero rating

  • Look for opportunities to improve cash flow and VAT efficiency, and reduce costs of VAT compliance

  • Manage relationships with accountancy firms and other third parties

  • Assisting the VAT Manager and Tax Director to prepare for and participate in VAT audits and work with tax authorities to achieve satisfactory outcomes

  • Support the VAT Manager as required, developing the ability to deputise for him on occasions

The Successful Applicant

For this Senior VAT Accountant candidates will require the following experience:

  • Practical accounting experience or AAT qualified (Accounting Technician)
  • Knowledge of VAT &/or Intrastat in a variety of European countries:
  • Ability to work with systems, including a good working knowledge of SAP &/or tax bolt-on systems
  • Intermediate or advanced Excel user, able to analyse data from different reports to confirm completeness and identify errors
  • Problem solver who enjoys working independently on varied ad hoc and technical questions
  • Capable of working autonomously when necessary, but also likes being part of a team, supporting colleagues and sharing knowledge
  • Languages - not essential but useful if able to speak the language of the countries where VAT returns are filed.
