Communications Officer

The purpose of the role is to develop the communications strategy, messaging, audience and channels with the Director of Fundraising. The key responsibilities of the role include:

• To act as the first point of contact for media enquiries, ensuring the charity's responses are informed, timely, and relevant.
• Drive, develop and implement the charity's online communications, including co-ordination and maintenance of the website and social media channels
• To write media releases, statements, contributed articles and other public facing information, including policy position statements in conjunction with the senior management team.
• To translate scientific documents into easily digestible documents for lay audiences.
• To proactively promote the charity's views and work through inventive media relations work.
• PR event co-ordination, launches and press visits
• To solicit and write up case studies for use across the charity
• To copy-edit and rewrite articles created for local press and magazines by staff members and fundraisers

Who we're looking for
• Demonstrable experience working for a public relations, corporate communications or public affairs department in a not-for-profit organisation
• Experience managing and developing proactive and reactive media relations.
• Previous, recent experience managing national media campaigns including: strategy development, crafting pitches, media outreach and coordinating press interviews and events
• Experience of representing an organisation at events, conferences and meetings.
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage a varied workload
• Excellent copywriting and proof reading skills
• Ability to write engaging feature material, often about complex and sensitive issues.
