Role Purpose: To improve the firm's business development capability by acting as an internal consultant and coach to the lawyers carrying out the BD activity. The purpose of the job is to impart knowledge and expertise to our lawyers so they can sell the firm more effectively. This is not a sales position and the BD manager should rarely have first hand sales contact or sales conversations with clients.
KEY TASKS
Processes
• Where they do not exist already, introduce robust BD processes, measurable through increased fee income, and ensure their adoption by lawyers in order to achieve effective activity:
- in the pursuit of BD targets,
- in the defence and development of key clients
- in the defence and development of key target sectors
• Develop and evolve existing processes in consultation with the BD team to continuously improve their effectiveness.
• Ensure that reporting of activity is consistent and disciplined across all teams and generates robust management information.
Management & Leadership
• Establish a reputation within the lawyer group as a "go to" expert in BD and the leader in any legal team's group discussions on BD
• Using that position of leadership drive increased BD activity and adherence to best practice within pursuit, client account, practice area and sectoral development teams. Ensuring that meetings take place at required frequency to generate activity and ultimately results.
• Take ownership of the pursuits to ensure that any pursuit is executed professionally through management of the lawyers involved. Maintain control of and manage next steps in each process.
• Ensure that the most effective team is involved in each pursuit. Ensure lawyers involved in pursuits attend planning meetings and participate in rehearsals.
• Develop junior members of the BD team through training, exposure to and involvement in BD coaching and management at the appropriate level in addition to delegation of administrative and BD management tasks as appropriate.
• Ensure that firm's tendering processes are adhered to.
• Ensure that the firm's branding and presentation guidelines are enforced and adhered to in any presentational or pitch documentation.

• Excellent organisational, time management and project management ability.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to write, present and talk persuasively, professionally and fluently at the highest level.
• Ability to be assertive, to influence and work closely with a demanding internal audience to achieve results under time pressures.
• Ability to progress multiple projects simultaneously.
• Track record in BD, tendering/pitching role including interacting and preferably coaching senior level staff.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to enable effective relationships to be developed with a wide range of professional and support staff.
• Commercial, client-centred approach.
• Strong attention to detail coupled with the ability to see the big picture.
• Self motivated and disciplined, decisive and able to work on own initiative.
• High personal drive, energy and enthusiasm.
• Pro-active, self confident and resilient.
• Possess sound judgement and able to act decisively.
• Possess good political antenna and able to act accordingly.
• Self motivated and has ability to work autonomously but know when to refer decisions back to the Marketing Director as appropriate.
• Good team player.
• Understanding of the importance of confidentiality given the competitively sensitive nature of the department's work.
