KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. With the Director of Buying and Retail Sales, develop and implement the retail buying strategy.
2. Ensure that the requisite structures, systems and procedures are in place to implement the buying strategy.
3. Develop, procure and manage existing ranges of quality merchandise that are aligned with the collections and activities of the museum.
4. Work closely with the Retail Sales and Buying Teams to ensure the procurement of bespoke merchandise meets customer and financial expectations.
5. Manage the retail stock holding within agreed financial parameters.
6. Manage all supplier relationships; defining the optimum supplier base, terms of business, product specifications and supply logistics
7. Reviewing standard ranges on a periodic basis to ensure that sales are maximised.
8. Ensuring that Retail Sales and Warehouse teams have timely information for stock delivery and availability.
9. Lead, manage and develop the retail buying team.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Meet annual retail sales, margin and profit targets within agreed Budget levels.
2. Meeting retail key performance indicators including stock levels, stock turns, out of stocks and write offs.
3. Ensuring the Retail Buying operation procures appropriate products that meet agreed quality standards and are supplied on time at the best terms to the museum.
4. Working with stakeholders, make recommendations for bought in product for the standard retail range and for special exhibition and gallery openings and ensuring that necessary approvals have been obtained.
5. Ensuring that there are systems and procedures for placing orders, tracking product delivery and processing payment.
6. Ensuring that the e-commerce operation has suitable product developed and available for supply.
7. All product sold meets relevant regulations and trading standards and that customers or the museum's reputation is not put at risk.
Who we're looking for
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
1. Experience of managing a large Buying function. This includes managing a wide supplier base, identifying new suppliers, negotiating supply terms and managing the supply chain.
2. Financial skills required in management of sales prices, trading margin, and maximising financial yields.
3. Expertise in retail systems to track sales performance data, stock cover and ordering requirements.
4. Strong negotiating skills.
PERSONAL SKILLS
1. Ability to balance commercial performance with the ethos of the trading environment.
2. A good team player who can forge positive functional working relationships with Retail Sales Manager and Warehouse Manager.
3. The ability to work with a cross section of collection based stakeholders to enable a close match between retail product and the organisation.
4. A dynamic individual who drives change and can lead others through the change process.
5. Relishes trying new ideas and opportunities but can calculate the level of risk against the opportunity.
