Permanent ⁄ £70000 - £85000

Updated February 12, 2010

You will head up and provide an In House legal function to M J Gleeson Group Plc, reduce the costs that have previously been associated with using external lawyers and develop internal processes to minimise the risks associated with the sometimes complicated contracts the company is involved in.

The primary focus is to advise M J Gleeson's Strategic Land Business in the acquisition, promotion and disposal of strategic land opportunities and to assist in the management of the land assets. You will also advise the Group and it's board of directors.

For M J Gleeson's Strategic Land Business you will focus on the following key responsibilities:

• Negotiate and draft land purchase, option and promotional agreements.
• Set up robust systems for assessing the risks of transactions.
• Perform basic searches on property in accordance with your remit to reduce risk.
• Input into planning strategy and tactics.
• Advise on complex matters including collaboration and equalisation agreements.
• Manage External solicitors to ensure: costs are minimised; consistency of advice, consistency of quality and good working relationships.
• Standardising the legal documentation used by the Strategic Land Division.
• Advising on areas that arise from time to time such as litigation disputes and those agency agreements that the Division enters into.

You will also be required to advise the Group on the following areas:
• Complex contracts that may include PFI, affordable housing contracts, regeneration contracts and contracts with local authorities.
• Risks to the group and the processes and procedures that would minimise this risk.
• Standardising those reporting procedures

Who we're looking for
You should be qualified lawyer with at least 8 PQE experience working either In House or with developer clients. Experience in property acquisition, land development or residential development is essential.

It is essential that the successful candidate is a senior lawyer that is able to demonstrate the ability to deal, without supervision, with those contracts and technical issues that will arise in this specialist area. In addition you must be able to identify the potential risks associated with residential development transactions and those matters that require the use of external solicitors.

A main focus for our client is to find a candidate that is delivery driven, has a pragmatic and commercial approach to decision making and a strong awareness of business needs and risks.

The successful candidate must also demonstrate the ability to communicate with senior management in a confident and succinct manner.

We require a lawyer who has gained the necessary experience for the position advertised. The PQE identified on this advertisement is a guide only and does not preclude applications from those with more or less PQE.

About our client
The Group specialises in urban housing regeneration, residential property maintenance and strategic land trading. With their Headquarters based in Fleet Hampshire the company boasts a presence across the UK, with a particular emphasis on the North or England and the South East.

Strategic Land is the land and planning promotion company arm of the Group. Over the years they have taken an increasing significant role in strategic land throughout the country. They are now widely recognised as specialists in identifying new opportunities and successfully managing them through the complexities of the planning system.

This team of 6 is particularly adept at evaluating and purchasing parcels of land without planning consents. They have gained an enviable reputation for the coherent approach they bring to the process. With serious shortages driving development land values up and competition for developable plots becoming fiercer than ever they feel there is huge potential for this team and this division of M J Gleeson Group Plc.
