People are central to the successful delivery of DWP's (including Jobcentre Plus and Pensions, Disability and Carers Service) overall strategy as we move forward. Employees typically demonstrate an enthusiasm and pride for the work they do which impacts the lives of so many in the United Kingdom. DWP (including Jobcentre Plus and Pensions, Disability and Carers Service) historically have been viewed as a place where you can build a career spanning many years, and whilst this is a great positive it also presents challenges. These include the ability of the organisation to import talent from the external market; and the speed with which we can develop the existing skills base to ensure we can translate our vision into reality over time.

In January 2008 DWP recruited Chris Last as HR Director General. His principal responsibility is to reorganise the HR function to better serve the wide range of DWP businesses (including Jobcentre Plus and Pensions, Disability and Carers Service). In conjunction with the HR Executive Team, six key areas have been highlighted which will provide the foundation to ensure HR is viewed as best in class in the UK. They are:
