Retail assessment centres

If you’re applying for a retail job and you’re invited to an assessment centre, don’t lose your cool, it won’t be as bad as you think and there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself enjoying the day.
A day at an assessment centre involves group exercises, one to one interviews, in- tray exercises, verbal and numerical testing, presentations and an array of other tasks designed to give you the chance to showcase  your skills. Usually held at the head office, one of the stores or a training venue, you will have an opportunity to meet other applicants as well as members of the business you’re hoping to join.
Make sure you do your preparation before the big day; research the company and the role and you will feel more at ease when you arrive. Don’t dwell on the tasks once you’ve completed them, even if you think you did really well or really badly. Lots of candidates have failed parts of an assessment centre but still get the job just as applicants who though it was a sure thing have been rejected.  Above all, relax, be yourself and don’t try to second-guess what the assessors are looking for; this way you’ll increase your chances of landing a job that’s a good fit for your personality, skill and experience.
