About Our Client
British Geological Survey are a world renowned scientific research organization who specialise in geoscience research. BGS is housed within the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and are affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).
BGS provides a core science mission to inform the government of science related to the subsurface and its interfaces and also undertakes applied research for solutions to earth and environmental processes, both in the UK and globally.
BGS is funded directly by the UKRI as well as through research grants and via private sector contracts.
The Corporate Health & Safety role is crucial to the safety of everybody who works for BGS. The scientific research that BGS carries out can be complex and is often carried out in parts of the world that mean that these projects are high risk.
The main responsibility of this role though will be to drive a positive health & safety culture across the organization and this will require you to have a visible presence and force in respect to delivering initiatives and compliance.
This role will be challenging as you will find yourself having to advise a range of stakeholders on a range of issues that are often unique and that you will not have encountered before. The very nature of the work that BGS do mean that they have a lot of field based scientists who will be working in locations and situations that will sometimes require urgent advice and you will need to be able to provide the required advice and at very short notice.
You will work closely with project managers both within the UK and overseas to ensure that all projects are effectively planned to be health & safety compliant and correctly audited particularly if they involve the use of third party sites or equipment.
Day to day duties will include overseeing the on-going delivery of the health & safety management system (SMS), leading investigations into serious accidents and incidents, keeping abreast of legislation and best practice, ensuring that appropriate health and safety training is provided for staff, monitoring compliance and adjusting policies and practices as appropriate, as well as staff and budget management.
The Successful Applicant
Applicants to be role will be expected to be qualified to a NEBOSH Diploma level or equivalent and have a minimum of 5 years experience working within a health & safety role.
Naturally you will be able to demonstrate a highly developed knowledge of health & safety regulations and be fully up to date with all recent developments in respect to regulations.
It would be advantageous to have worked within a research environment previously but applications would also be welcomed from other background such as engineering or manufacturing.
You will also have a proven track record of communicating and presenting to staff at all levels of an organization from operational staff to board level staff.
The role is based out of Keyworth but will require extensive travel across the UK so ideally you will live in or around the Nottingham region.
What's on Offer
A salary of £38,318 - £42,576 is on offer dependant on experience.
You will also receive a very generous benefits package which includes 30 days annual leave plus 8 days bank holidays and an additional 2.5 privilege days.
