This role will be based in our beautiful Edgbaston campus alongside the new Library and Sports Centre (see http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/index.aspx). The University is well located in the UK's "second" city with easy access to all main transport links and boasts its own railway station on campus.
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual to join our well established and highly regarded Legal Services team, to help support our pioneering academics, and researchers address key national and global challenges. We advise on a wide variety of matters, from the creation of the UK's only University Training Secondary School, to the establishment a new Life Sciences Park.
The Deputy Director will provide high quality legal advice in their area of specialism relevant to the activities of the University and over a period of time, be required to extend their legal knowledge and understanding to provide authoritative professional advice over a wide range of complex legal matters that affect the University. The Deputy will be responsible for the general administration and operation of the department and will gradually be expected to provide day-to-day management of the other members of the team. Reporting to the Director, the Deputy will work closely with all other members of the team, and with senior colleagues across the University.
The Successful Applicant
The University is looking for a solicitor or barrister with significant post qualification experience working in private practice or in - house with the ability to lead cross institutional programmes associated with his or her principal accountabilities. The successful applicant will have proven leadership experience, excellent interpersonal and influencing skills, be solution focussed and a skilled negotiator who is able to gain commitment and engagement from stakeholders and individuals at all levels. In light of the diverse nature of the University's activities and engagement, there is flexibility as to the specialism that the individual can bring to the team, but a willingness to acquire new skills and knowledge is essential.

The terms of employment are generous, including 40 days holiday each year (including Bank Holidays and University Closed Days) and subject to eligibility, membership of the Universities Superannuation Pension Scheme, where the employers contribution is significant.
