Job Description

The External Affairs Manager leads our External Affairs team in all aspects of communications and external-facing priorities.
Leading the External Affairs team, the role covers three key inter-linking areas of work* internal and external Communications;
* strategic stakeholder management and relationships that underpin effective feedback and insight to the professions from running the scheme and strong engagement
* Parliamentary and policy.Key responsibilities:
* Team: Lead the External Affairs team of around 3.5 FTE, including supporting the development of the team and individuals and the wellbeing of team members.* Strategy: Develop an annual communications and engagement strategy. Oversee horizon scanning work to ensure both the Board and organisation have a clear understanding of factors and issues in the sector and their implications, advising on responses to issues where required. Ensure strategic stakeholder engagement and communications risks are proactively identified and effective mitigations proposed to the Board and senior management.* Profile and reputation: Ensure the organisation has appropriate media coverage, and effective, targeted stakeholder engagement, which builds trust and confidence and effectively manages our reputation. Ensure the organisation has a clear and compelling corporate narrative.* Stakeholder engagement: Manage relationships with key stakeholder groups, ensuring relationships are developed at the right levels, clear understanding of stakeholder needs and interests and appropriate programmes of work. This includes building a portfolio of organisational knowledge which supports the delivery of strategic briefs.* Planning and delivery: Working with External Affairs team members, develop and deliver plans of work in key areas including Communications and Engagement, Parliamentary, Policy, Feedback and Insight, and Internal Communications which support both strategic and annual business plan objectives.* Internal Communications: Advise the management team, and other internal teams, on internal communications issues, and lead on the implementation of the internal communications plan.

The Successful Applicant

Experience of managing a range of different stakeholder relationships to build trust and confidence, and maintain and enhance the organisation's reputation

* Track record planning a framework and programme for an organisation's stakeholder engagement activity

* Strong track record of working in a communications or PR environment, writing clear, effective and high impact articles, press releases and social media content

* Experience of managing the work of a small team and developing their skills in key external affairs disciplines

* Experience of digital, print and broadcast media

* Experience of working with journalists and other media stakeholders

* Strong planning and personal organisation, supported by personal resilience

* Lead the external affairs team in critical incident management, taking direction from the Board and senior management
