Job Description

The key responsibilities as the Head of Building Safety are as follows:

  • Work with the Director of Health and Safety to establish, develop and improve systems within a framework to ensure the company's compliance with the upcoming Building Safety Act

  • Assist the business to interpret the regulatory framework to ensure buildings are designed and equipped with appropriate safety systems, focusing on fire and human behaviour aspects

  • Build an understanding with the business of building operating environments, legal frameworks, golden thread and safety case requirements for each building and implement changes necessary to meet those requirements

  • Apply the key principles of good governance and risk management to ensure building and resident safety

  • Provide effective communication to efficiently deliver building safety projects, engage residents and maintain accurate information systems that support the proactive delivery of building safety

  • Know what needs to be measured and when, to manage actions and track progress, provide feedback and learn from experiences

  • To know, understand and demonstrate personal leadership, have adequate oversight of building safety risk, understand resident's and stakeholder's needs and develop a framework to monitor those risks

  • Ensure that remedial works to buildings, necessary to meet statutory building safety requirements, are co-ordinated and delivered appropriately

  • Manage specialist surveying contractors (i.e. Fire Risk Assessors), including desk top reviews of Fire Risk assessments at planned intervals (quality assurance auditing) to ensure a suitable and sufficient FRA is provided

  • Provide specialist professional and technical advice to effectively coach and mentor to improve knowledge and understanding of fire safety, resident engagement and compliance aspects relating to building management

  • Monitor Repairs and Maintenance contractor's work for their impact on building safety, inspect completed works and ensure standards are to the highest quality

  • Follow up unacceptable performance with contractors to ensure issues are remedied

  • Identify technical solutions and develop planned programmes of Fire Safety Works in consultation with the Refurbishment & Technical Services team

  • Manage local fire authority enforcement notices and liaise with the relevant fire authority who issued the notice

  • Organising remedial works and prepare formal responses to the fire brigade

The Successful Applicant

The successful Head of Building Safety will require the following skills/experience:

  • Degree level education or equivalent in the relevant field, membership with relevant professional body (i.e.IOSH, IFE, RICS, CIOB)
  • Substantial experience at senior management level within a property-related environment, managing building safety teams
  • Extensive knowledge of the regulatory environment and best practice in relation to building safety and the built environment
  • Proven experience of effectively leading and managing complex projects whilst delivering excellent customer service
  • Experience of developing strong working relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience and working knowledge of the CDM regulations, including project management
  • Have a passion for the industry and will take personal ownership for ensuring policies and procedures are appropriate, insightful, and helpful and that these are put into practice
  • Have the ability to get into London on a regular basis for site visitation and office meetings
