About Our Client
A globally admired institution based in Oxford who has a significant construction commitment both now and in to the long term future. This organisation would require you to be base in central Oxford for at least 4 days per week but offered an amazing working environment as well as sector leading work.
Provide expert legal advice and guidance to the organisation on a broad range of construction issues across the range of the businesses activities. This will include the post-holder assuming primary responsibility for some of the most complicated and valuable (from a financial or reputational standpoint) construction transactions and overseeing and providing expert advice and guidance to the organisation on the legal aspects of those transactions and draft the key legal documents;
Provide advice and assistance in the formulation and drafting of policies and procedures in response to changing legislative and regulatory frameworks and the business needs of the organisation and advise on the development of strategic plans;
Identify opportunities to better manage legal risk and increase knowledge/awareness of relevant legal issues within the client base;
Develop networks and play a leading role in managing relationships with external lawyers, project managers and consultants;
Attend internal and external meetings, playing a leading role as the subject matter expert and point of reference for expert opinion in relation to the works and services procurement and construction issues influencing and shaping decisions;
Advise senior managers, and colleagues across the organisation in a practical and commercial context that identifies and advances solutions to problems; this will vary between a purely legal perspective and a more constructive, pro-active approach that aims not just to identify problems, but solve them, for example by suggesting an alternative way of achieving the same end result;
Coordinate team initiatives to improve the services provided by the team, providing line-management and mentoring for other members of the team as required;
As a subject matter expert in construction, deliver briefing and training sessions to key senior stakeholders
The Successful Applicant
a) A solicitor admitted in England and Wales with significant and demonstrable experience of non-contentious construction law and a working knowledge of contentious construction law and property law;
b) familiar with the JCT and NEC suites of contract;
c) able to articulate legal principles and concepts clearly and concisely both in writing and orally;
d) confident in exercising substantial independent responsibility and discretion and manage major projects;
e) confident and able to persuade and influence senior officials and colleagues and deal directly at all levels of the University and with external professional advisers;
f) flexible, imaginative and able to identify creative and practical solutions to complex problems;
g) pragmatic and able to advise on relative risks;
h) logical, able to understand complex situations, and assimilate large quantities of information quickly and accurately;
i) adept at working in diverse teams; able to appreciate and adapt to the needs of different client groups;
j) proactive and keen to identify areas where practice can be improved;
k) adept at dealing with novel situations and cross jurisdictional issues; and
l) well organised and able to prioritise in-progress work efficiently in order to satisfy deadlines without close supervision.
