Job Description

  • Advising and delivering commercially focused legal advice in a pro-active and timely manner to all business units and group business functions of the group.
  • Assisting business units and group business functions in concluding a wide range of legal agreements, by advising, drafting and negotiating, including, but not limited to : -



· Supply of services agreements
· Purchase of goods and services agreements
· Non-disclosure and confidentiality agreements
· Exclusivity agreements
· Binding and non-binding heads of terms and letters of intent
· Data processing agreements
· Licences
· Guarantees, letters of credit, retention or performance bonds
· Ancillary banking documents

  • Advising divisional bid management teams in connection with tenders for provision of waste related services in the public and private sectors
  • Supporting corporate finance, business units and group business functions with mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures
  • Assisting with activities relating to compliance matters including but not limited to Data Protection, Competition, Anti Bribery & Corruption and Modern Slavery
  • Supporting the group legal function with concluding transactions and managing the storage and distribution of deeds and documents with surveyors and external legal advisers.
  • Managing and resolving disputes and third party claims made by or against the group
  • Assisting with corporate legal matters e.g. reorganisations, board minutes and corporate governance requirements for the group
  • Leading or assisting in Legal Services initiatives such as the development of systems, standard documents, policies and procedures and related training.
  • Instructing, liaising with and managing external legal advisors.



The Successful Applicant



The role of Legal Counsel reports to the Senior Legal Counsel.

  • This is a broad role with advising in relation to legal agreements accounting for the majority of time of the role holder.
  • The role holder must have a thorough knowledge of commercial law, the dynamics of the various group businesses and the ability to apply one to the other in an effective manner in which the exercise of judgement is vital.
  • The role holder is required to use personal initiative to react to transactional opportunities/difficulties as they arise and to deal with complex legal issues.
  • The role holder will be expected to communicate with all levels of management from depot/sales manager to Group Executive Committee members including the COOs, CEO and the CFO; the job holder will also be expected to communicate with external advisers and regulators.
  • The role holder will be expected to have a practical, hands-on partnering approach, coupled with the ability to build effective working relationships with the wider team. They will be robust and confident enough to clearly and concisely communicate legal risk with commerciality in mind.



The role requires a qualified solicitor who: -

  1. Is commercially focused in the giving of legal advice;
  2. can communicate succinctly and effectively (in writing and orally) with a broad spectrum of internal clients;
  3. is able to simplify and distill sometimes complicated subject matter for the internal clients;
  4. is able to prioritise and manage the demands of the different internal clients;
  5. is responsive and flexible to changing priorities;
  6. is outcome focused and able to propose recommendations and solutions.



The role exposes the job holder to: -

  1. working as part of small team;
  2. a broad range of legal matters;
  3. senior leaders in the business.

Salary Circa £60,000 - £70,000

Car allowance - £6000
