My client is a leading defendant law firm that provides innovative, high quality, specialist legal services to insurance companies, corporates, and public sector bodies. Their Travel Team in Leeds handles claims for Tour Operators, Travel Agents, Bed Banks and Travel/EL/PL/RTA insurers. Our team deal with all types of accidents which happen abroad, including claims pursued in the UK, EU and beyond. We therefore advise our clients on English law, including the Package Travel Regulations, as well as international regulations and conventions, such as the Athens and Montreal Convention. Particularly in light of Brexit, we are also instructed to advise upon issues arising from applicable law, jurisdiction and enforcement.

Job Description

Paralegal / Solicitor / Legal Exec - Travel Law

  • Have proven experience in an insurance or legal based environment handling casualty and/or motor and/or travel claims, both pre-litigation and post litigation.
  • Be able to advance cases to a conclusion by taking into account all aspects e.g., litigation risk, apportionment with co-defendants and potential recovery.
  • Take ownership and follow through on agreed commitments and will take the initiative to overcome problems and implement solutions swiftly.
  • Have the ability to take a pro-active and results-orientated approach to claims in order to deliver optimum savings whilst reducing lifecycle.
  • Have proven ability to make the right decisions on legal liability, assessment of damages and the need for investigation or rehabilitation.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of claims procedures and how these can be applied for the most effective results.
  • Be fully versed in the pre-accident protocols, court processes and terminology and the cost implications thereof.
  • Be able to explain relevant information clearly to both internal and external customers and thus can best influence and manage relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Know when to use past experiences to identify and proportionally manage issues.
  • Manage all client work allocated in accordance with the detailed procedures and quality standards contained in the Firm's manuals and client protocol.
  • Ensure that all client work is progressed expeditiously, and that the client is kept regularly informed where appropriate.
  • At all times exercise high standards of client care in a professional manner.
  • Ensure the confidentiality of all the Firm's clients and client documentation and information.
  • Comply with the Solicitors Accounts Rules and the Rules of the Professional Conduct of Solicitors in accordance with the Firm's guidelines.
  • Ensure good working relationships with external institutions and organisations.
  • Take responsibility for and attend self-development and training.
  • Compliance with relevant time recording and billing targets.
  • Business development including involvement in tenders, delivering presentations and training.

The Successful Applicant

  • A qualifying law degree or equivalent
  • A background in personal injury.
  • A proven track record of handling a mix of pre-litigated and litigated matters to a successful conclusion.
  • At least three years' experience of handling cases.
  • Previous experience in travel would be desirable, particularly from a candidate with a background in handling claims under the Package Travel Regulations and/or someone who has experience of dealing with applicable law/jurisdiction disputes.
  • Previous exposure to this area of the law, demonstrated by previous experience within a firm who has a team handling these types of cases.
  • A pro-active and results orientated approach

  • Ability to work under pressure and pay attention to detail
  • Good commercial awareness
