Job Purpose Statement

As Projects Communications Manager you will support key programmes and projects being delivered in the Customer Directorate. You will own all communication deliverables, internal and external, associated with the programmes they are assigned to, and will ensure that a detailed and robust communication plan is developed, managed and delivered.

A vital part of this role is the management of communications with partners in other Train Operators, Owning Groups and related bodies. Key responsibilities include:

- Our projects are typically funded through the Train operators, and ensuring they are aware of the developments or issues is an essential part of the role.

- Working with other project team members to ensure input and feedback to the project is obtained from the Train operators and other industry / interest groups.

- Ensuring clear two-way communication with relevant suppliers and external bodies.

You will be responsible for the delivery of a high quality, effective communication service to one or more projects or programmes. It is essential that all messaging is clearly understood across all the stakeholder groups and interested parties. It is also essential that our endeavours are recognised and appreciated.

We're seeking previous experience in understanding, identifying, planning and managing all communication deliverables required by the project/programme, and integrating those communication strategies into the project lifecycle - supporting major milestones and deliverables, while also supporting the team when things are not going to plan, and when effective, proactive and regular communication is especially critical.

Experience of delivering and executing all communication deliverables within a technically complex programme is essential. Information to inform the communications will need to be sought from many teams, including those with technical backgrounds, which may require translation, to ensure efficacy of the communications.

Leading internal Working Groups and overseeing communication strategies and providing Communications consultancy support are also key parts of this role.

Preferably you'll also have similar experience of liaising with the Press Office & external 3rd parties and managing challenge through external senior stakeholders. You will be someone who has been through the business change cycles and understands that releasing projects gives a great news story, but there are tough times to communicate on the way also.

We are looking for a go-getter, who will come with new, fresh and innovative ideas, who understands how to effectively communicate at all levels of an organisation and seniority, from senior management through to MD level.

  1. Accountability:

The post-holder will be directly accountable for all communication strategies, collateral and actions. They will provide energetic and enthusiastic input into the field of communication, and activities that align to this.

The post holder will be responsible for working closely with stakeholders, SMEs and suppliers to ensure the quality and effectiveness of their output. This output will be critical for the successful delivery of the inflight programmes and projects to which they contribute.

The post holder has the freedom to decide how to achieve the objectives of the various projects and programmes, as long as those decisions are taken in accordance with our's values and behaviours.

The post holder will need to be comfortable working in new and/or poorly defined areas. The post holder will need to proactively identify emerging issues and opportunities which will support the project or programmes.

  1. Key Relationships:

Success in this role is heavily dependent on building successful and strong relationships within the programme teams, and across the organisation. They will need to demonstrate highly effective and developed facilitation, negotiation and persuasion skills when working with business stakeholders when developing and executing the communications strategy.

They will also require the ability to build and maintain solid relationships with stakeholders in their role. Astute listening skills and a good eye for detail are also critical in the role.

The Successful Applicant

Previous experience of working on communications on projects / programmes that have had related to digital transformation / IT modernisation with a impact on external customers.

The Project Communications manager will need a degree or equivalent, with at least, 5+ years' experience working in a Project Communications Manager role.

Broad vocational experience ideally within Transport and rail, Travel, Retail, Utilities, Professional Services.

A an understanding of marketing and how messages and communciations are received.

Experience in digital delivery of websites and how it impacts the consumer

Experienced in working in time-pressured environments with excellent delivery record E

Experienced in working with internal and external stakeholders and suppliers
