Job Description

The role comprises of three main areas of responsibility:

  1. Lead and coordinate the complete end-to-end group reporting process and ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial data reported to senior stakeholders .
  2. Act as business partner providing strategic, timely and accurate advice to management and internal stakeholders on all aspects of technical accounting and structuring for large-scale projects, including development, operational initiatives, restructurings, acquisitions, and divestments.
  3. Take ownership of technical accounting treatment memos and local policy papers. Manage overall library and expand documentation and seek alignment with auditors and other teams where applicable.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Group reporting:
    • Lead and efficiently maintain the complete end-to-end group reporting processes, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. This involves indirect management and coordination of a team of ten qualified accountants. The position holder will liaise with the Global Financial Reporting team and provide guidance on policy and procedure to the team. Quarterly financial reporting submissions require oversight and project management and understanding and sense check of results at a high level, and good communication and escalation of issues. The position holder will seek to improve or streamline the process where applicable and follow up on lessons learned outside the quarter end reporting period. Take part in strategic reviews of resources at management level to ensure the team is adequately resourced and trained to deliver group reporting. Gaining an understanding and appreciation of the overall results through commercial, operational and market information from internal stakeholders is key.
  • Business partner and project manager:
    • Providing strategic, timely and accurate advice management, project teams and support functions on all aspects of accounting and structuring for projects. The position holder will be responsible for accounting assessments of all ongoing projects and developments (new operational contracts, new developments, offtake arrangements, business transactions etc.). The position holder will proactively seek to build positive working relationships with internal teams: Controlling, Tax, Legal, Projects and Investments, Corporate Finance, Supply and Trading, Development and Consenting, Operations, External stakeholders where applicable in the case of business transactions.
    • Engage and influence stakeholders to ensure that business cases adequately consider the accounting and structuring impact of business decisions. Ensure that approved projects and new developments are communicated and implemented in the team. The role holder will have the flexibility to seek support from within the UK and Ireland Accounting team on project accounting assessments in order to develop the team. Accounting assessments need to be made from both a group reporting and local company level and, some circumstances, will need to consider other aspects of governance such as joint venture partners and external debt.
    • Liaise with the Financial Projects team to align on treatment and update on status of all emerging and ongoing projects. Liaise with auditors to align proactively on accounting treatment and the impact on the audit process.
  • Technical accounting:
    • Interpret and implement Group accounting directives within the team. The implementation should be consistent and coordinated across the team and aligned with other global teams and the Global Financial Reporting team.
    • Collate and maintain all technical papers on accounting treatment and local policy. Create inventory of documentation, identify gaps and updates required, prioritise and expand documentation to encompass all key judgements. Liaise with the Global Financial Reporting team, the UK and Ireland Accounting team, the Group Accounting team and other local teams across the globe to find commonalities and consistency of treatment.
    • Strategic review of changes in accounting standards, actively communicating to affected teams and coordinating implementation. Liaise with auditors to align on accounting treatment papers and discuss application of IFRS.

The Successful Applicant

  • Technically adept qualified accountant with a recognised accounting body (ACA / ACCA) or equivalent education or background with over four years' experience in industry or practice.
  • Experienced in application of IFRS to complex business scenarios and in interpreting and analysing legal agreements and fact patterns.
  • Self-confident with the ability to develop effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation and an ability to influence stakeholders.
  • Pro-active mindset and project management skills.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks in a time constrained and pressured environment whilst balancing the need for quality accuracy and integrity.
  • Well-developed prioritisation and delegation skills to ensure tasks are completed accurately, on-time and to a high standard.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to deliver presentations clearly.
  • Disciplined approach with an eye for detail and quality of output.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Excel and PowerPoint.
