Job Description
Senior Network Engineer - Research EnvironmentYou will be accountable for:
- Providing triage, analysis, and resolution of network incidents
- End-to-end incident management, bringing in additional skilled resources as required
- Engaging or deferring to other technical teams as required in resolution of incidents
- Acting as the major incident manager (MIM) when incident impact warrants it
- Providing timely updates to stakeholders or the incident manager during incidents
- Hands on troubleshooting and configuration of networking equipment including Cisco, Meraki, and others as required
- Participating in global on-call rotation, including some weekend requirements
- Leverage network management systems (NMS) to understand issues and pinpoint where the problem likely is and the impact it is causing
- Collecting packet captures as necessary, performing initial diagnosis of output where possible
- Interfacing with local contacts and service providers as needed to resolve site connectivity, hardware, service issues, holding providers accountable to SLAs
- Proactively identifying, engaging, and acting on situations where "things could be better"
- Continually evaluating network capacity and performance; making recommendations for design changes as appropriate
- Assisting with on-going maintenance of CMDB information and updates of our internal Knowledge Base
- Fulfillment of DNS/DHCP requests such as A or CNAME record requests, new DHCP scope requests, or updating MX records
- Implementation of changes as defined and requested by design and planning team
- Working with the design and planning team to define, refine, and suggest alternate designs or permanent remediation of issues
- Liaising with vendor support for detailed technical troubleshooting as needed
- Determining the need for Return Merchandise Authorisations (RMAs) and engage vendor for RMA completion
- As a senior engineer, bringing leadership and top end technical skill to coordinate incident support calls. This role is ultimately responsible for ensuring the network is online; there are no further escalation points beyond the senior Engineer.
- Acting as a coach and mentor for more junior engineers, partnering on issues and helping to shape a future team of senior qualified team members
- During a declared Major Incident Management (MIM) outage and for priority incidents, take charge as technical lead, coordinating other technical teams and driving resolution
The Successful Applicant
Senior Network Engineer - Research EnvironmentKnowledge & experiences:
- Hands-on on troubleshooting and configuration experience in supporting large multi-national corporate networks utilising a diverse set of technologies and vendors
- Demonstrate experience working directly in Cisco IOS and the Meraki dashboard
- Demonstrate experience troubleshooting and configuring WLAN technologies; Cisco and Meraki experience desired.
- Demonstrate experience with Cisco NSO, SAE, UCS, ISE, and DUO is desired
- Demonstrate experience with VMware
- Extremely proficient in the use of IOS and Meraki dashboard in the troubleshooting and configuration of the network
- Extremely comfortable collecting and analysing packet captures
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or comparable certification required or demonstrable work experience and skill
- Expert level understanding and application of network protocols and functions including DMVPN, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, NAT, DNS, DHCP, ACL, Spanning Tree, VLAN, OSI Model, NetFlow, TACACs
- Ability to convey complex technical topics into layman terms while under time constraints
- Significant experience leveraging NMS tools (some example are Nagios, SevOne, LiveNX, SolarWinds, NetScout, ServiceNow, Meraki Dashboard, etc.) to diagnose & triage issues or requests
- Must be extremely familiar with the use and limitations of syslogs, SNMP traps, device polling, NetFlow, and other management functions
- Understanding of ITIL and its principles such as event, incident, problem, and change management
- Organisational skills to manage multiple priorities at one time while meeting deadlines
- Experience leading network implementation & refresh projects from a technical, not just a coordination perspective
- Must be able to review network designs and identify flaws in those proposals as well as make recommendations on how to resolve
- An ideal candidate will have significant experience designing, implementing, and operating a very large network
