What are the main trends?

We are increasingly experiencing increased demand in the newly qualified candidate market as many audit functions look to expand their team from the bottom up. To add to the increased buoyancy at this level, core finance teams are also recruiting heavily. Often, financial analyst, group reporting, and FP&A roles are often perceived as more glamourous. It is our job to enlighten new candidates to the appeal and career progression that comes hand-in-hand with internal audit.
Activity in the senior market is often more selective, and part of a growing trend for more established companies to have larger, more specialist and more complex internal audit functions. Many companies do not yet have the framework to promote talent from within and so look to hire externally meaning there is an increasing trend for top talent moving to progress their careers.

What are candidates generally looking for?

Candidates generally look to make the move into a stable and strong organisation that can develop and train them so that future progression can be obtained. With retention being key for businesses, buying back candidates has been very common. To combat this potential risk during the recruitment process all candidates must have a good idea about what the business can offer as a whole to internal audit candidates. High travel has and will continue to be an issue in retaining strong internal auditors. Consideration into how the travel can be spread out or lowered could see you opening up the pool of candidates available.
