Michael Page Legal partnered with Squire Patton Boggs in Manchester for the first of their Autumn In House Lawyer Seminars. With further seminars scheduled for Leeds, Birmingham and Reading, we kicked off on the 7th October with a breakfast seminar at Squire Patton Boggs’ Manchester offices.
Having taken a great deal of feedback from previous client seminars, Michael Page Legal and Squire Patton Boggs were hoping to give their clients the broadest mix of useful and practical information, from legal updates in key areas of law, an update on the market and a session on key soft skills for anyone in a position of leadership or management. A summary of the mornings’ seminars is detailed below.
Update on the legal recruitment sector (Luc Salmon)
Luc Salmon, Operating Director at Michael Page Legal, gave an update on market conditions and specifically concentrated on the fierce competition for talent that is currently raging in the legal market. He gave practical tips on what in house teams should be doing to retain their best people and how best to go about recruiting new talent in the quickest way possible. Keeping your board safe (Rob Elvin)
Rob Elvin, Managing Partner of the Squire Patton Boggs Manchester office, gave the group a concise and compelling case for making boards aware of their collective and individual responsibilities for health and safety in a landscape where a director’s liability is a complex challenge. Rob outlined the key responsibilities falling upon the board and what they should be doing to comply with guidance and the law.
Labour and employment – modern slavery (Alison Treliving)
The seminar was then given a very useful and valuable insight into the concept of “Modern Slavery” and how corporations and their brands could fall foul of it by employment partner, Alison Treliving. Alison gave the group an understanding of how important this could be and the necessary steps that are required to ensure that this is not happening within a client’s supply chain.
Update on Consumer Rights Act 2015 (Russell Kelsall)
Russell Kelsall, Partner in the Financial Services and Litigation Group at Squire Patton Boggs, looked at claims that the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which comes into force on 1 October 2015, is the ‘biggest overhaul of consumer rights in a generation’.
Data protection and intellectual property (Caroline Egan and Andrew Clay)
Caroline Egan gave guidance on the major changes to data protection law currently being agreed in Brussels, the risks they pose, and what businesses should be doing now to prepare for them. This was followed by specialist, Andrew Clay, highlighting some of the most important developments of intellectual property within the last twelve months, in particular, an update on cases concerning the use and misuse of the internet, which continues to push the boundaries in this area.
Squire Patton Boggs and Michael Page Legal have sought to use the seminar programme as an opportunity to do give the attendees an insight, by a specialist or an expert, into an area that will be key to their positions as leaders within their organisations. In the last seminar series, the attendees were treated to insight into the skills needed to deliver powerful, motivational and successful presentations or public addresses. Is it all about the money? Holding on to your best people (Hedley Consulting)
Andrew Hedley and Hedley Consulting assist leaders of law firms to create mould-breaking strategies, develop strong brands, forge robust client relationships and design compelling propositions. On this occasion, Andrew used his considerable experience to focus the group on how organisations can hold on to their best people when incentivising them financially isn’t always possible. The session looked at ways in which organisations can engage, energise, motivate and show employees that they are investing in them and their future.
