Barbados - The Facts
The island of Barbados offers coral shore beaches of fine white sand stretch along a blue-green sea. With coral reefs and a global attraction as a holiday destination, Barbados is known for its luxury. For many the island also holds career prospects in the offshore industries.
Barbados is an independent island nation, a third of the land size of London, in the western Atlantic Ocean only approximately 400kms from the South American continent. This tropical island offers a stunning combination of coral, pristine beaches and rolling hills and thanks to the constant trade winds off the Atlantic has a warm but moderate climate. Average temperatures in winter are around 70°F/ 21°C and 86°F/ 30°C in summer. Having long been considered a luxurious holiday destination the Island can offer professionals challenging and interesting work, as well as that much sought after quality of life. There are direct flights from the UK that take approximately 10 hours.
Living and working in the Barbados
Despite gaining independence from the UK in 1966, Barbados is sometimes called ‘Little England' to reflect the most English of the Caribbean Offshore jurisdictions and cricket is a big sport here. There is also a carnival feel to the island with the annual crop over festival in July and August being a major event.
Due to the size of the islands and the relatively small population of 280,000, the working environment is of a concise nature so professionals can expect to work in smaller teams where their value will be felt. They will also work closely with their clients in an environment where they will be treated as a valued member of the team. Due to the size of the Islands, commuting distances are negligible which mean there is more time to enjoy outside work pursuits. Interestingly the standard of living boats as one of the highest in the world.
The island has a thriving sporting and social community and it is easy to make friends in a place where there are so many like minded people keen on water sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving or for those who prefer a more relaxed pastime, beach life. Salaries are uniformly high and with the favourable tax position UK and US professionals are roughly 50% better off in real terms. Professionals from Canada, Australia and other commonwealth countries could find themselves earning three or four times their current salaries. Relocation expenses and temporary accommodation and transport are also included as standard in most packages.
