Job Description

As the Mechanical Shift Engineer you will be tasked with the following -

  • Carry out planned and reactive mechanical maintenance to ensure the safe and efficient operation of production equipment across the paper mill
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and breakdowns on a wide range of plant and machinery, including rotating equipment, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems
  • Respond promptly to unplanned equipment failures during shift operation, minimising downtime and production losses
  • Execute preventative maintenance activities in line with the site's CMMS and maintenance schedules
  • Ensure all maintenance tasks are completed to a high standard, complying with site safety rules, permits to work, and risk assessments
  • Work closely with production teams to prioritise maintenance activities and support continuous running of the paper machine
  • Carry out fitting, installation, alignment, and repair of mechanical components
  • Accurately record maintenance work, faults, and spare parts usage within maintenance systems
  • Participate in shift handovers, providing clear communication on equipment status and outstanding actions
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing equipment reliability, safety, and efficiency
  • Assist in shutdowns, overhauls, and major maintenance projects as required
  • Ensure good housekeeping standards are maintained within workshops and plant areas
  • Actively promote and follow health, safety, and environmental procedures at all times
  • Support apprentices or junior engineers when required and share technical knowledge across the shift team

The Successful Applicant

A successful Mechanical Shift Engineer should have:

  • Relevant mechanical engineering qualifications, such as NVQ or equivalent certification.
  • Hands-on experience in industrial or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills for mechanical systems and machinery.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to work on a rotating shift schedule, including nights.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills to liaise with team members effectively.
